+1 yIn my opinion marriage is all about documenting that 2 people are together nothing more or less. Married people do everything that people who are dating do. Living together, having kids,... Etc marriage adds that little detail that the goverment now also knows u r dating
05 Reply- +1 y
That's because it's a big mistake, people shouldn't be doing all these things before marriage...
If marriage means just a contract on a paper, bo one would be interested in marriage but they prefer to just live together and live as if they were married, the essence of marriage is the blessing of god... - +1 y

True!
+1 yBecause I’m a Muslim, Islamically no it isn’t. You need to be Islamically married for the marriage to be valid. BUT if 2 people were married through a civil marriage, I would view them as a married couple personally, yes.
39 Reply- +1 y
No matter what your religion is, i believe that a marriage who doesn't have the blessing of god in it ain't a true marriage, cause is the one who makes a couple become one and make them a family, while a civil marriage is just a manmade contract, technically they are married but unlike a religious marriage
- +1 y
Yes I agree I’d only personally accept a religious marriage because we need the blessing of God but also Islamically speaking the stipulations brought by Him to protect our rights and guide the marriage
- +1 y
True cause a manmade contract can't a couple a family or make them one spiritually and physically, also there is no guidance to how your marriage should be, the way god wants it...
A man made contract is just a paper where you both sign that you agreed to each other and that your now husband and wife and that's all... - +1 y
Yes! Thank you!
- +1 y
@TonyMetal___86. I would ordinarily agree with you expect marriage no longer (unfortunately) has any religious component. Now marriage is mostly about the government and a legal contract.
- +1 y
@KrakenAttackin that's true, and the majority doesn't have faith anymore

+1 yYep, also believe in common law marriage although there’s less states that recognize common law as in the past…
23 Reply- +1 y
Don't know what a common law is 🤔
I wonder how do you consider it a real marriage since it's man made, where's the blessing of god? I mean the whole marriage thing is sacred and the paper is just a paper for the government, in a church marriage, god makes the couple as one physically and spiritually, also they become a family ans gets the blessing of god and at this point they won't remain as strangers anymore, also there are the sacred wedding vows... etc
That's what i believe in, if the marriage doesn't receives the blessing of god than it ain't a real marriage, it's just a manmade contract 😌 - +1 y
@TonyMetal___86 I respect your beliefs... but what if the couple doesn't believe in god, or at least not the same god that you believe in? Does that mean that cannot have a real marriage?
- +1 y
@AviatorTom ofc they can have a real marriage, in the end a marriage is a marriage, but i'm speaking about people who believes in god, does they think that a civil marriage is real like a religious one? Because we all know that in a civil marriage, there is no blessing, no god's guidence and nothing is sacred, just a piece of legal paper that's all, for people who doesn't believes in god than ofc the man made contract is just enough and all they need...
- 426 opinions shared on Marriage & Weddings topic.
+1 yA marriage is a contract between two people. The ceremony, civil or religious, is what defines the contract.
11 Reply- +1 y
You can say that...
+1 yWell... What exactly is a "real marriage" to You? In my opinion, a civil or state-sanctioned "marriage" is simply a parody of a marriage, as it comes with an easy way to a divorce, and thus is not designed to last like a marriage should.
11 Reply- +1 y
A civil marriage is also man made, not sacred like a real marriage...
+1 yYeah.
If anything, religion is the one that isn't real. You still need to do all your civil paperwork if you get married religiously.
God doesn't file your joint taxes for you.21 Reply- +1 y
I don't care about such things at all, they are just some legal papers, what matter is that i have a real sacred marriage which for sure you don't believe in it
Anonymous(18-24)+1 yOf course it is. It just may not hold the sacred value to people that religious marriage does.
My personal opinion - whether religious or non-religious marriage is always better than any other kind of romantic/sexual relationship.11 Reply- +1 y
I agree with you on this aspect...
+1 yMarriage is, first and foremost, a contract. You enter the contract together, it’s a valid marriage.
A religious union is no more valid than a civil one.110 Reply- +1 y
A religious union is sacred and blessed by god, that's the real marriage while the civil one is just a piece of paper...
- +1 y
Oh, but a religious marriage is designed to last, and the state-sanctioned "marriage" comes with an easy divorce path.
- +1 y
@CalmUntilAbused 👍🏻👍🏻

@CalmUntilAbused
“.. a religious marriage is designed to last…”
But they don’t 🤷♀️ - +1 y
Well... That is due to a general lack of responsibility among people these dayw. And mind You, the religious marriage is usually still valid, it's just that either one or both parties decide to ignore that fact out of their irresponsibility. I don't know for sure about other religions, but a Christian, especially a Catholic Christian, is supposed to be responsible. If either of the parties do not fit this requirement, no marriage is going to ensure this responsibility.
- +1 y
@CalmUntilAbused
“That is due to a general lack of responsibility among people these dayw (Sic)”
So much for “designed to last.” 🤷♀️ - +1 y
I mean, any design can be corrupted by people either evil or irresponsible enough. The world we live in is not a fairy tale. The major assumption we have to make when assessing any kind of relationship between two or more people is the responsibility of all the parties involved. Humanity is granted free will, and if this gift is misused, it can wreak absolute havoc in any relationship.
- +1 y
@CalmUntilAbused
So religious marriages are just as susceptible to breakdowns as non-religious marriages?
It’s like….. they are the same. 😱😱😱
But no. Please! Tell me again how they are superior while also being the same. - +1 y
Oh, they are by no means the same. State-sanctioned marriages are basically encouraging breakdowns (known as divorces), while religious marriages discourage them. However, there is no cure for human irresponsibility.
- +1 y
@CalmUntilAbused
“Oh, they are by no means the same.”
Yeah. I know. Yours is superior to that of others. Blah! Blah! Blah! 🙄
If you have a need for your stuff to be more special than everybody else’s stuff, so be it.
You have the bestest marriages, little buddy. Yes you do! 👍
“However, there is no cure for human irresponsibility.” Apparently, as I have been told, we were created that way. 🤷♀️
The civil aspect of the marriage is what makes it legal in the US. Religious rites are optional.
23 Reply- +1 y
But a religious marriage is the real marriage, not the civil one...
- +1 y
No problem
+1 yI do. People deserve love and happiness. And I am not without sin, so I can't throw a stone. It is not my job to judge. That task goes to someone higher than me.
03 Reply- +1 y
Sure for people who are atheist or are married from a different religion...
A real marriage is a religious marriage because without the interfering of god, it ain't going to be a real marriage... - +1 y
May god grant you the longevity of life to ponder on his wisdom
- +1 y
Thank you 🙂
+1 yEven more real, as in a secular state, the one that counts in terms of the law is the civil one. The church marriage is just a bonus.
13 Reply- +1 y
That's because your government only accepts the civil one, but what matters is what makes your marriage a real marriage, it's the one in church...
- +1 y
I have to disagree. This may be true for a group of religious people, but everyone is married equally with a civil one.
- +1 y
I know, but for religious people, a civil one means nothing
+1 yYes it is as it is the actual legal part of the marriage.
09 Reply- +1 y
Yes it's only the legal part and not the real part...
- +1 y
That is the only part required to be legally married and any other ceremony or hokus pokus is just trim and not necessary to be LEGALLY married. Any jackass with 15 dollars can get a legal minister's license on the internet and church weddings are just dressing and nothing legal.
- +1 y
It seems that you know nothing about church marriage
- +1 y
Church wedding is a choice , but still not a legal binding contract as the license everyone has to get. For that you have to go to court to divorce, church you can just walk away from.
- +1 y
Churches have courts too, it's called the spiritual courts, in my country there is no civil marriage, when you want a divorce you go to the spiritual courts...
- +1 y
You are full of shit as I just looked up the requirements for marriage in Lebanon and it is done with marriage certificates from courts such as in the US and other countries. Doesn't even mention churches or religion.

Real means sacred, also with the guidence of god

That seems a restrictive definition of "real". My blender isn't real then because it isn't sacred?

I'll be using my rescue kitten's litterbox in the interim...

That's disrespectful, i won't comment on such opinions...
- +1 y
No, it's not disrespectful. I'm a religious person, but words have meaning and the one you picked "real", if you are going to define that way, is intrinsically nonsensical. So nothing is real if it is not holy?
- +1 y
@BoopBoopBeep if you're a religious person than you know what i mean by real...
- +1 y
@TonyMetal___86 but if you're posing that question on a board where everyone doesn't share your view then you ought to use precise wording. If you just want an echo chamber to your own beliefs then ask the question at church/mosque/tabernacle/shrine/whatever your religion has.
- +1 y
- +1 y
@BoopBoopBeep it's just a convo, you have your beliefs and i have mine...
- +1 y
@BoopBoopBeep I am testing it and praying it works!
- +1 y
@TonyMetal___86
so you're asking the atheists here if they believe their marriage is real without it being ordained by a representative of God. Self-evidently yes, of course they do, or they wouldn't have gotten married. That's why I'm saying your question is nonsensical, what answer are you hoping to get here? - +1 y
I'm not hoping for any specific answer, people can answer the way they way cause it's their opinions as long as they respect others...
- +1 y
@TonyMetal___86
So if I ask someone what is their favorite hair color, I'm seeking to attain information as to their preference of hair color, which I may or may not share with them, but that is still information applicable to them and that can be quantified and analyzed.
Literally nobody is going to say "my non religious marriage isn't real" so what data points are you looking for off this conversation? How many religious people also believe in civil marriages? Okay, let's roll with that. Most of those religious marriages are still registered with the state at the courthouse or records building or wherever you do it wherever they are. Can we agree there? So in effect, most religiously married people are still asking for some kind or recognition from the state, thereby legitimizing the state's ability to recognize the legitimacy of a marriage. Otherwise why file it, ever? F the state.
So the question seems to be a really roundabout way of asking, "fellow religious people, how many of you consider the marriage of your heathen friends to be legitimate?" Now that I think would be an interesting result, considering appropriate sample size of course, even though I'd hardly call this random or representative, but whatever. I'd also suspect a great many people who may feel "no" on that one aren't going to say it on here though. - +1 y
@BoopBoopBeep thanks for the insight...

@TonyMetal___86
you're quite welcome. I just want you to get useable information - +1 y
