Do you agree atheists also have marital vows too?

There was a discussion about what marital vows are and our mutual friends thinks that only applies to religious, married folks. I disagreed.

Non-religious people still get married in courthouses, vineyards, the beach, etc. Church isn't the only place to get married. A marital vow doesn't have to include god nor religion in it. Being loyal and committed is already a vow. Would you agree non-religious people and/or atheist also have marital vows?

Yes they do. The church didn't even get involved in marriage until fairly recently in history. Marriage has nothing to do with religion unless a couple wants to make it religious.

It's largely psychological. The difference between marriage and just living together is psychological and symbolic - maybe add tradition to that. Those things can be pretty powerful, and cause the couple to take it more seriously. A religious ceremony has meaning if the couple believes it has meaning. If the couple doesn't believe it has meaning, then it doesn't. But that doesn't take away from the fact that they are getting married, as opposed to just living together. It's taking it to a higher level.

Atheism is a religion. It started as the cult of reason in the French revolution. It's a religion aimed at absence from God. Thus why the cult of reason went around lopping off the heads of many clergymen during the french revolution an abolished the Catholic church. The cult of reason was a state religion. Communism is an echo of it. It's the same premise as Satanism, where you strive to become your own "god". Lucifer wanted to sit on God's throne and so to do atheists. They think they don't need God, because in their mind they are superior...

Yeah, why not? When it comes down to it it has very little to do with god. People just want to profess their love to the person

“Religious” marital vows are for religious couples, while there are marital vows that don’t have to include god at all.

I'm an atheist. My wife is not religious, but she tends to believe in a Creator and, to some extent, in the supernatural.

Actually, we are both spiritual, but have our own personal views. We discuss that stuff on occasion.

We got married almost 27 years ago. I believe that marriage is a pledge of honor, a solemn vow that, once made, I would never break. My wife feels exactly the same way.

Both of us had had relationships, but neither of us had ever been married before we met. We are now dedicated to each other for the rest of our lives.

I don't need laws or some supernatural deity to have morals and ethics. I know right from wrong. I actually think some laws, including religious ones, are sick.

Religious or not vows are always the same. The only thing that changes is who you’re making them to.




A vow doesn’t need to be made to God it can be made to yourself. It can be made to your partner. It could be made to the witnesses.
A vow isn’t just a promise. It’s a code. It’s a way of life.
Marital or non-marital vows should all hold the same weight. Every time you break a vow, you lose a bit of yourself in the process.








Anyways, that’s just what I think.
I am not an atheist by the way I am just not a follower of any mainstream religion, and I generally keep my religious beliefs to myself.

Fun fact marriage existed before given religious meaning. Also predates Christianity by a long time.

So longs if that marriage don't say god I don't see the debate about it not been atheist.
