Missing someone you love can help you appreciate the more once you are together again. But that's for someone you love. If the relationship is bitter or annoying, then it does not help the marriage at all.

It works differently. Yes it works if the absence is for smaller amount of time (a week) and not often but it really doesn't work if it is longer and often. I would probably start looking for my options if it happens for long.
