Do you agree with this?
Yes and no.
On one hand, I am revolted by greedy, mercenary people who are obsessed with money and see everything as a business transaction. They keep track to insure that they are receiving the greater benefit. Those kind of people also seek power and control. They are incapable of love.
I also disdain people who are into consumerism and status.
But there is some business involved in marriage. It's a partnership in which both of their lives are at stake.
People needs money/resources in order to survive. So a married couple manages their finances so that they both are happy and fulfilled, and also in order to build a future together. They are not selfish or frivolous. They support each other.
They make important decisions together, such as buying a home and cars, home improvements, large expenditures, etc.
They work together as a team when it comes to earning income, cooking, cleaning, taking care of kids (if they have any), gardening, home improvement, building projects, and leisure time.
But a healthy marriage is much more than business. The two people love, adore, respect, care for, and trust each other. They are best friends and lovers.
Marriage is warm and safe, not like a business transaction. In fact, it will even survive through rough times.01 Reply

You make a good point, Kelly. Marriage and family is WORK, and in a way, that is BUSINESS. There is a LOT TO CONSIDER when taking on the responsibility of marriage and family, and in many respects, handing all of that is much like conducting a 'business'... Profit and loss? How and who manages the finances? Who will make sure the kids are healthy, educated, and disciplines (when necessary)
Sure... it is like a business for any responsible married couple.

+1 yThere are some similarities, but a marriage involves intense emotions and intimacy, something rarely found in a business.

Anonymous(30-35)+1 yI suppose that depends on the type of business marriage is being compared to. I mean, it's kind of apropos and the analogy could really hit home harshly if carried far enough. Some marriages are like a mom-and-pop joint; it pays the bills and give you something to put by and pass along to the kids, but it's not really thriving. Others are like Ponzi schemes; super exciting with a fantastic growth trajectory, until you realize that it's all smoke and mirrors and poof! Others start out in garages and with lots of persistence and sacrifice turn into multi-billion dollars corporations that have far-reaching impacts in the lives of millions of people and continue to produce results long after the founders have died. Just my two cents...

+1 yThere's definitely a certain business aspect to marriage. The reason people get married at all is to combine resources between two families. It's a very practical and utilitarian institution. It's the reason that infidelity is such a big deal. It's not because you're breaking someone's heart and trust (although that's definitely part of it), it's because you're compromising the agreement between two families and the passage of resources that was supposed to happen through that agreement.
It's really only been in recent decades in the Western world that people started to date and marry for reasons of emotional fulfillment. Everybody else understands that marriages are very much business agreements.
00 ReplyI think this is an excellent analogy, and yes, the business comparison is practically perfect. I like to imagine it in terms of her being the owner and CEO, and I'm the janitor or clerk, etc.

Anonymous(45 Plus)+1 yIt's an administrative process of cooperation between two individuals to the betterment of both. It's also a great environment in which to raise kids.
Many confuse the marriage process with the emotional, perhaps romantic, bond that we tend to expect but this need not be the case. Which is why arranged marriages can work.

+1 yI agree and would say it is very much like the investment side of business, where the more time/care you put into the relationship/marriage the more you get out of it.

+1 yNot really a business is a way to make money. Many modern women view marriage as a way to make money. Most men do not. In fact if marriage is a business it is an awful business for men since they lose money in marriage more often than not

+1 yWell it should not be like a business it should be because two people love each other and want to spend the rest of their lives together
00 ReplyHuman relationships are alliances of convenience... but I'd still find bringing money into it distasteful. Most things become distasteful when money is involved.
00 ReplyYes , its a financial circumstance , and thats vital.

+1 yI've never had a business contract that could be broken without penalty to the party who broke it while requiring the other party to continue to financially honor the terms.
00 Reply Yeah, it's the business of extracting wealth from the man and giving it to the woman once the woman gets bored of him. Only a fool would get married if they are a man.

I really don't see marriage as a business. It's a commitment of respect and care towards each other to me not a business.

We never got married because of money in the first place. We got married with plans of having a family and creating this safe and beautiful environment for our kids.

I'm during a divorce. The only money we split are from savings account. The rest of assets each of us have on their name, so there is nothing to split. Of course, most of them are bought during the marriage so theoretically we should split it. But we are not stupid. He bought his stuff from his salary, I bought mine stuff from my salary. We are not thieves to take someone's else property
