What makes a couple get married but then have an open marriage?

So there’s a woman I know from work has an open marriage and I always wonder why they even bother getting married to begin with if they want to mess around and not commit?
She says she and her male partner even live seperately most of the time with their own places, answers would be helpful thanks?

tons of reason. i don't agree with it and think the same as you, but that's their business. i think it's ridiculous and a waste of time

here are some reason

variety... and wanting to have experiences with other people (just be single. but i guess they want the tax benefits of being married...)

different sexual preferences/fantasies...

some say it "strengthens the relationship". i don't understand how but hey. apparently they say it "increases trust, communication, and intimacy"

avoiding the monotony of the marriage (you may have just married the wrong person then...)

being able to grow individually while still being in a marriage (this ones stupid lol)

then this one, completely bizarre in my opinion, is if one person is interested in an open relationship but the other isn't, the compromise is to stay married and have the other do whatever the hell they want by having sex with others. incredibly toxic

then there's the weirdos that believe in polygamy

Cuz monogamy is unnatural and recent invention. These types of combos are the future along with trial marriage certificates.

Marriage is a legal condition with advantages and disadvantages. That is unaffected by a couples sex life.
