It's an old saying. Men had all the power in the past, so it's not like the men had zero control in a relationship like many do nowadays. It was basically a woman's job in a relationship to keep her man happy, so there would have been no point in saying that back then.

Well times have changed now, and women don't treat men as they used to in the past, which in a way is a good thing because relationships should be about equality and based on love, not duty. But because a lot of people hear that saying, they assume the wife matters more, when in reality it's both partners in a relationship that matter.

It's great that women have equality now, but now we have to remember that men also matter.

    Thanks for the post!

Most Women in the USA marry for a lifetime of being pampered and if the guy isn't pampering her to keep her happy, she makes his life hell ontop of the stress from work (one of the reasons most marriages end in divorce)
The most stable marriages are "best friends with romantic benefits", because she married him for who he is, not for what he can provide.

It's really not a great saying at all. I don't know who came up with that saying but it is so far from the truth. If the husband is not happy as well, then the marriage will just fall apart eventually.

It’s an old and kind of sexist saying that means if you make your wife happy, she’ll make your life happy. It is kind of sweet though, even if it is sexist.

Could you please expand on how the saying is sexist? I am neither an advocat nor an opponent of the saying. I just want to know where the sexism is.

@CuriousMoonFox it implies that we are locked into outdated gender roles where the husband is head of the house and the wife has to work behind the scenes to get her way. But if you don’t read it with the sociological context in mind, it’s kind of sweet.

I am struggling to see or feel anything provoked by the saying that I could associate with gender roles.

The picture the saying paints in my mind is that of a dominant, demanding wife that is never happy with what she has while the poor slave husband tries everything to accomodate her. Without success. This might be worse than the housewife in the 50s but at least I would be able to understand why you would call it sexist 😂

@CuriousMoonFox the more I think about it, I don’t think it’s intentionally sexist at all. I think it’s a sweet and somewhat truthful saying about how a woman can make her husband’s life better if she’s happy. Though I do think it can be applied to any couple of long duration, not necessarily a married heterosexual couple.

It isn’t true. It’s a misandrist take that is meant to keep men subservient to a woman. But it won’t be abolished because there are too many misandrists out there.

It goes along with what I always say about most men. "They will say or do whatever they think will make their partner happy."

    That doesn't make it genuine.

It's a somewhat humorous observation that many women's response when they don't get their way is to dig their heels in, get obstinant, and make a point of being as unpleasant as possible until you give up and do what they want.

An unhappy guy still does everything in his power to keep his family happy. An unhappy woman does everything in her power to hurt the family. So the saying is accurate.

As you try to make another person happy things get difficult because happiness is an internal emotion and the only person you can make happy is yourself.

Because it doesn't take much to make a man happy. If the wife is happy that is 98% of the work; to make both people happy. So it is almost effortless to get that other 2% when you already achieved the 98%.
