Society only exists because people follow various traditions. Those who are eager to weaken/remove/destroy traditions are foolish. One day society will collapse because too many things were removed but of course, the know it alls deny this and believe that every decision they make is best.

@chocolatetwopointo There's a theory that society is like a brick wall and you can remove random bricks but at some point you have removed too many and the wall collapses. Or another analogy I've heard is that society is like many fences our ancient ancestors created to keep monsters away from the village. But after so much time people have forgotten what the monsters are... so they cut down the fences. To give you a more concrete example, today more and more men see no reason to work or to do hard jobs or jobs that aren't fun because modern society is telling them that life is ALL bout their personal convenience and feelings. Where does that lead? Who do you think maintains the power plants, the waste water treatment plants, fresh water plants, who does the construction, road maintenance... who is distributing food? Who is doing essential maintenance on homes and other dwellings? Not people who are having fun all the time or get to feel that life is all about themselves. Everything that keeps civilization running requires people to not actually be constantly self-centered. But most people can't see this... it's not something they want to see. They want to pass the responsibility on to somebody else or just claim it's not important. And these same people are totally unprepared to survive in a world without all of the protections/conveniences/tools of civilization.

@chocolatetwopointo Society only works if most people aren't self-centered... otherwise they will not contribute to what is good for the whole community. On a smaller level if you're too self centered you won't even do what's best for your family and kids. The breakdown of the family is a symptom of this too. Too much freedom will eventually lead to people behaving like wild animals. What's the danger there? What do wild animals have? They don't have cities, power, water treatment plants, mass food delivery and so on... Also look at prisons for a glimpse of what happens: the physically strongest rule over everyone. And a lot of people would die because they are not cut out to be self sufficient.

It's an old tradition but a good one I think, maybe not necessary in todays age but the father is so proud on his daughter's wedding day walking her down the isle.

In the old times it symbolized the Daughter leaving her Father's household and setting up another household with her husband under his surname. The father turns over all the responsibilities he had as her father to her husband. Of course in modern times most women are 30 by the time they marry and long outside their Father's household.

Most brides even today wouldn't dream of bucking this tradition. They want the white dress, they want the church wedding, they want their father to give them away, they want the first dance with their new husband, and later with their father, they want to cut the wedding cake, they want their proud mother in tears of happiness. Big milestone in a girl's life even today.

Ehh I find it a little bit patronizing honestly. It's from an age when we thought that a bride wasn't capable of thinking for herself or controlling her own life so she needed her dad to possess ownership over her until she was ready to be "transferred" to her new keeper. I get that we don't typically think of it that way today and it's seen a sweet gesture but it comes from a pretty nasty place in my opinion

I'll admit that the man asking for permission is lame, but the rest is simply the father knowing he won't be around forever to protect his daughter so he's trusting her husband to take care of her. Most women try to set themselves up with a man who can provide/protect so I don't see what the issue is.
