Societies often don't value the sanctity of marriage due to shifting cultural norms that see marriage as less of a necessity and more of a personal choice, increased acceptance of alternative lifestyles, and the desire for individual fulfillment and equality in relationships. Factors such as the negative impact of previous generations' high divorce rates, economic pressures, evolving women's roles, and the portrayal of marriage in media also contribute to a decreased emphasis on traditional marriage and its perceived sanctity.

    Cultural and Societal Shifts
    Marriage is not a necessity:
Marriage is no longer seen as essential for a fulfilling life, and fewer people believe it's necessary for personal happiness.
    Acceptance of other models:
There's greater societal acceptance of diverse relationship styles, including long-term partnerships without legal marriage, as society's views on family have evolved.
    Focus on personal fulfillment:
Individuals increasingly prioritize self-esteem and personal fulfillment, leading them to question if marriage aligns with these goals.
Influence of Past Generations and Economics
    Fear of divorce:
Younger generations are often cautious about marriage due to witnessing the high divorce rates among previous generations, making them less inclined to enter into marriage.
    Economic factors:
Economic instability and changing labor market dynamics can impact marriage rates, as some individuals may feel less "marriageable" or struggle to provide for a family, according to Brookings.
    Obsolete models:
The traditional model of marriage, which was often built on a woman's economic dependence, is now obsolete, and progress has been made in creating more equal and fair models for family life.
    Individual and Relational Factors
    Evolving individuals:
The dynamic nature of individuals evolving and growing together as a couple is a core aspect of a healthy relationship, but sometimes people don't grow in tandem, leading to a depletion of one partner's energy, notes Reddit users.
    Media influence:
Media like reality shows can present an unrealistic and often negative portrayal of marriage, turning it into a game or a spectacle.
    Changing roles for women:
The significant gains and increased professional experience for women in the workforce have led to greater independence and a potential reluctance to let marriage and childbirth negatively impact their careers.

Why is it that we as a society do not value the sanctity of marriage in today's day and age?

Several factors contribute to the changing perception and value placed on the sanctity of marriage in today's society:
Shifting Societal Norms: Traditional expectations surrounding marriage, such as the timing of marriage or the importance of raising children within marriage, have become less rigid. Society now embraces a wider range of relationship and family structures, leading to less pressure to marry for social acceptance or to follow a specific "timeline".
Increased Individualism and Personal Fulfillment: Modern societies place a strong emphasis on self-development, personal growth, and individual happiness, according to Psychology Today. Some individuals may see marriage as potentially restrictive or unnecessary for achieving a fulfilling life, prioritizing personal ambitions and goals over the legal partnership.
High Divorce Rates and Reduced Stigma: The prevalence of divorce, and the reduced social stigma associated with it, have led some to view marriage as less of a lifelong commitment, according to the National Institutes of Health (NIH). Experiencing parental divorce can also make young adults more cautious or skeptical about the stability of marriage.
Economic Independence, Especially for Women: With increased opportunities in the workforce, women have become more financially independent, reducing the economic necessity of marriage that existed in previous generations, according to Brookings.
Alternative Relationship Models: Long-term cohabitation, and other relationship structures are becoming more accepted and commonplace. Many people choose to build lives together without the legal framework of marriage, prioritizing flexibility and authenticity.
Reduced Influence of Religion and Tradition: As societies become more secular and diverse, the traditional religious and cultural reasons for marriage may hold less sway for some individuals.

It is important to note that despite these shifts, marriage continues to be a meaningful and valuable institution for many individuals and couples.

We as a society have always been weird when it comes to marriage.

Back in the old days , we used to have societal pressures to rush us to get married at a really young age and have our first child at 21 then have many more.

Times changed and now we have overpriced weddings , overpriced childbirth , not enough wages to sufficiently raise a child let alone afford a big enough house , and women take their time to meet the right guy also they live life before being locked in the ol’ ball n chain.

Not to mention the negative impacts on the guys.

Back in the day marriage was seen as a sacred religious ceremony locked in legality to be towards the man , now we live in a society where it is just seen as legality with a little tradition mixed in. LGBTQ+ , Biracial Marriages , etc. get to join in and not be shunned away.

You can compare the past to the present and cherry pick all you want to be discarded or accepted , though one thing’s for sure: It was always weird and will forever be weird.
Wouldn’t call it ruining sanctity since it was always weird.

I believe there are several reasons why society today places less importance on the sanctity of marriage. First, individual freedom and personal happiness have become top priorities. People prefer to live life on their own terms rather than strictly following traditional institutions. Additionally, economic challenges and career-focused lifestyles lead many to delay or even avoid marriage. Lastly, societal norms have become more flexible, and with divorce being more widely accepted, the way people view marriage as something sacred has shifted.

because it was origninally meant to fix social issues that don't exist anymore today. namely the fact that women can't generate a good income on teir own.

No-fault divorce has made ending marriages too easy. It used to be abuse or adultery. Now it's all about feelings.

No clue. I certainly value it. It’s why I want marriage so much.
