You need to make sure you know yourself well, which will help you determine what you need and want from your spouse. You need to know your own strengths, but also your flaws and weaknesses. Your spouse ought to help bolster the strengths and balance the flaws.

You also ought to have similar beliefs and values, particularly when it comes to religion and faith. I say that because religious faith and tradition aren't things that you "just do", which is how many adherents of many religions already treat it. It's a way of life that, if it's even remotely important to you, you will want to hand on to your children. It's also how the marriage will share a more common and transcendent vision. Yes, you are helping to build and maintain your society with your marriage, but more than that, you are participating in some way in the Divine (or at least that's how traditional Christianity, Catholicism in particular views it). As such, this is one reason among others why I strongly oppose religious intermarriage. Sure, a few deviations here and there on ancillary elements aren't terrible, but there must be alignment on the core elements between husband and wife.

As far as political ideology and cultural values go? There should also be commonality. Religious faith directs you to the supernatural, but there is still a natural order to consider as well. You're not only going to hand your religion to your children, but also the world in which they will practice it.

These, I think, are the most important things people ought to consider when selecting whom they will marry.

2. Education ( vital )
3 . Employment
4 . Do they wish to have children? And what's the plan if this is to happen?
5 . Sexually how are you going? How will you maintain the spark?
6 . Commitment and individual Status. Where does this person sit.
7 . Your financial status is EQUAL? If not a pre nup is utterly vital , and include if children are involved.

I first make sure they don't have any narcissistic traits - Why? I'm not getting burned again. FTS Issues that can change them. If they "change," then it's just something they have been hiding. People don't change; they cover up, hide, or suppress. I've seen it more than enough times to believe that change doesn't truly happen. Give me a more specific idea of the change you are worried about.  Religion can have a big impact. Why? For me, personally, it didn't go well, but he was also not transparent about his religion, and that caused major arguments. If it is too different, you will have issues. Like Atheist vs Christian - Nope. Agnostic vs Christian - Better chance.

Life goals should be compatible. We cannot get married if we want to live in different countries or states, or if one of us wants to have lots of kids and one doesn't want to have any.

I also want similar values. Maybe we don't agree on every little thing, but we should agree on big things, like that it's good to be true to yourself.

These things matter to me because, unlike a casual relationship, with marriage I will ideally be with this person forever. So if we aren't compatible in these important areas, then it will make life much harder for us. It does not matter how attractive or charming a man is if he is not someone who I want to spend my life with.
