How important to the future of the relationship is the marriage proposal?

I have known multiple women who believe that they can tell EVERYTHING about a man and the future of their relationship from when and how he proposes marriage.
If it’s really that important, why don’t women take the reins and propose themselves? Guarantee that their future will be bright and beautiful instead of leaving it to those clumsy morons with testicles.
Just sayin’!
How important to you is the how and why of a marriage proposal? If it’s the be all, end all of the relationship, why not handle it yourself in order to guarantee that it’s handled appropriately?

The relationship itself is more important than the proposal alone. A proposal is just a moment.

But what I find important about the proposal is, how much effort and thought he put into it.
If he is just "proposing" at home with no effort at all, he can go fuck himself.
But it's different if it's still at home with candles, flowers or whatever she likes, whatever is important to her and he really put the place together and put in visible effort, that's cool.

I think the type of proposal, just like anything, can say a lot about the man. How much effort he was willing to put into it, how much he was willing to spend on it, how creative he was, how funny he was, etc. Every little aspect can be psychologically tied to who he is as a person and a relatively decent indicator or promotion of the kind of future they have together.

As for women proposing to the man? Sure. He should wear the dress to the wedding too and take her maiden name while they're at it.
