5 Home Tests To Distinguish Fake Diamonds From A Real One

Diamonds occur naturally and there is no dearth of fake diamonds in the market. Distinguishing the fake sparkle from the genuine thing is quite an arduous task and involves various chemical tests and determination of the physical properties of the stone.

Even if you lack the sophisticated equipment used to test the integrity of a stone, use these five basic home tests to determine if the diamond is fake or real!

1. Observing through the Loupe

Being a natural stone, diamond has some imperfections. On the other hand, the fake diamonds are quite flawless. Even then, a perfect stone must not be discarded immediately for it might be a lab-grown diamond. Also, observe the edges of a diamond. A real diamond has sharp edges while a fake diamond comes with rounded edges.

2. Sandpaper vs. Diamond

Most of the counterfeit diamonds are the cubic zirconias. When rubbed against the sandpaper, its shiny surface would be scratched up. On the other hand, being the world’s toughest material, a natural diamond will not be scratched by the rough sandpaper

3. The Fog Test

The good heat conductivity of diamond implies that is you breathe on a the surface of a real diamond, the fog will dissipate immediately. Cubic Zirconia and other stones are not as good conductors of heat as diamond and thus the warm breath will condense on the surface before dissipation. However, fake diamonds fashioned from Moissanite depict the same behavior as a diamond so further testing is needed to verify if the stone is real.

4. The Sparkle and Fire Test

High refractive index of the diamonds make them sparkle more than the other stones. White and grey colours are seen inside a real diamond and are referred to as the brilliance of the diamond. Rainbow colors, called fire, are observed outside the diamond due to the dispersion effect. Fake diamonds show rainbow colours inside.The low refractive index of other stones like cubic zirconia or quartz does not allow them to bend the light as diamond does.

5. The Read-Through Test

If the stone has not been set yet, place it on a piece of paper with writing on it. You will not be able to read anything through a real diamond for the light will be scattered. Conversely, the fake diamonds will magnify the writing and enable you to read it. The intricate structure of a real diamond will not allow the light to pass through.

There is no such thing as a "fake diamond".

Here's what there is on the market:
1. Diamond (natural) - carbon based, most consumer diamonds have flaws and off-clear coloration.

2. Diamond (lab grown) - chemically identical to natural diamonds, but usually flawless.

3. Colored diamonds - If you are buying a colored diamond, and you're not a millionaire, it's lab grown. Natural colored diamonds cost a fortune, in the range of hundreds of thousands per carat.

4. HPHT Diamonds - These are naturally mined diamonds that have been treated with High Pressure, High Temperature. The treatment removes any pressure cracks in the diamond, and impurities that result in a brown/yellow diamond becoming clear. HPHT treatment is used for lower grade diamonds, to transform them into higher grade. They are worth more than low grade, but less than naturally high-grade diamonds.

5. Amorphous diamond - carbon-based diamond, but carbon atoms not bound the way diamonds are. This is made from a tiny speck of diamond as "Seed" material, and then carbon vapors are added in a pressure chamber. Amorphous diamond is inferior and it will chip. When exposed to flame, it will also carbonize and turn black.

6. Cubic zirconia - Diamond lookalike. Cheap imitation that chips and has less sparkle. "Cubic" refers to its atom configuration. Due to this configuration, cubic zirconia cuts at different angles than diamond. An expert can tell the difference between cz's and diamonds, simply by looking at the angle of the cuts.

7. Moissanite - created in the 80's, I think moissanite is in its 8th-10th generation. It is not carbon, but silicon carbide. It is the next hardest substance behind diamond, and looks almost identical to a diamond. Will not chip. However, earlier versions of moissanite in the 80's and 90's were known to turn slightly green over the years. I believe the new versions do not have this problem.

The sales associates, at one of the places we looked at rings, tried to convince me to replace my center stone with a clear sapphire. It literally had no reflective qualities. I can see how if you have never seen how diamonds look, that would be okay, but I had grown up seeing my mom's jewelry glisten in the sun light. There truly is no comparison. Her ring could blind you at the right angle lol
