Getting my girlfriend a puppy for her birthday, would it be appropriate?

She likes dogs, and I love the girl. I want to make it a birthday she'll never forget. So I've already planned on two other small gifts. My main gift would be a puppy, a labrador which I can afford, but would it be appropriate to get on her birthday. I know she can handle the responsibility of having a pet but should I talk to her first? And how would you people react if your SO got you one?

I don't recommend it.
Does she live at home? If so does the rest of the family want a dog in the house? It does make the house dirty. And someone may have allergies.
If she's at home talk to the parents first. Make sure it will be OK. As well see if they know if she would want one. Or is so, maybe a certain breed.
Being responsible to own is one thing. Having the time to own one is another.

Make sure you dot your "i's" and cross your "t's" before doing this.

That's like getting her a kid- like getting HER a kid, then it becoming both your kid. It could change the relationship, could overwhelm her in that regard, but also in terms of then becoming a pet owner. Just think about this before you go ahead and do it. A pet is for a super serious relationship, you could call it an "engagement ring in disguise".

labadors are the hardest puppies to train cause theyre so athletic if she doesn't have the time and you can't afford it i wouldn't recommend it. you should look at dogs with her one day and see her reaction if she's begging to get one then that would be a good present but if her reactions just meh its cute then i would rethink about getting a puppy

No. I love dogs but couldn't take care of one right now. A dog as gift now would be a nightmare. Leave the living things gifts to when you're married and you can take care of it too

No. Unless you have talked to her about seeing if she wants one.
Also, PLEASE get a shelter dog, don't just go and buy one.
Shelter dogs need homes too, and they're cheaper usually.
I personally would be upset, but I just put my dog to sleep a few months ago.
