I think it's important that you find a scent that mixes well with your specific smell. On that note, if I were you and I wanted to really do the research on what smelled good on me, I would try a variety of scents and types of scents. There are musky ones, fruity ones, sweet ones, fresh ones, natural smells like vanilla and cinnamon.
My top ones that I think smell good on me are as follows (no particular order):

1. Adidas Dynamic Pulse: this is in the "fresh" category, from a review, "Composed of fresh citrus, cool mint, and warm cedar, this daytime fragrance is a clean, crisp scent that will awaken your senses in the morning and energize you as the day goes on. ... Smells nice and clean". It may be hard to find, as I'm not sure if they make it anymore. I always have to find it online. This is my go to and daily wearer.

2. Pinaud Clubman: this is an aftershave. "It is a masculine fragrance with notes of orange, lemon, and bergamot at the top.". I originally chanced upon this at Sally Beauty Supply, which is always the cheapest place to get it, but it can be had online if you are willing to pay more.

3. Brut Original: this is a classic, and for good reason. "Brut was launched in 1964. The nose behind this fragrance is Karl Mann. Top notes are Lavender, Anise, Bergamot, Basil, Orange Blossom and Lemon; middle notes are Ylang-Ylang, Geranium and Jasmine; base notes are Coumarin, Musk, Sandalwood, Oakmoss, Tonka Bean, Vanila, Vetiver and Patchouli."

4. Axe Dark Temptation: "combines the subtle aroma of chocolate with fresh gourmet scents, including hot chocolate amber and red peppercorn. " I use this one sparingly, as I do like it, but it feels like more of a special occasion scent to smell like musky chocolate.
I will also sample a new fragrance now and again if I'm in a store that sells them, just to see if I find something I like. But the ones above I like because they are easy to find, inexpensive, and easy to wear every day. I might be interested to wear a more expensive cologne if I found something I liked, but so far nothing has called out to me.
I mostly only wear deodorant and don't bother with cologne, and I have an electric razor now, I stopped straight razor shaving, so I don't even use aftershave anymore.

I actually just love lynx. All the man scents smell good on men. Just don’t over do it cause it becomes too much otherwise 🙂
Acqua de gio (Armani), Diavolo (Antonio Banderas), Panama (Borsalino), Dune (Dior)

Jo Malone is hit or miss but I liked their Amber + Lavendar. It's warm but refreshing. Top notes are Lavender, Bergamot and Mint; middle notes are Clove, Lily-of-the-Valley and Cinnamon; base notes are Amber, Patchouli and Myrhh.
@jamesgoldman This is how intelligent people talk about fragrance FYI.
Why would I care for following notes unless it's me buying it
it's not my job to sell the product, just sell the image
Casual racism, nice
That aside for now can anyone who isn't trained in aromatherapy actually tell anything about fragrance notes without being told them from the box/label because the resounding answer is no
I can tell you Black Orchid starts out sickly sweet like a liquidized marshmallow then turns oddly-floral with a hint of spice
That better for you
@jamesgoldman See, now you sound like a nice young man. I love it!
I just wasn't willing to do that 8 more times with fragrances I don't have to hand to fresh on my mind... the oddity of Black Orchid makes it rememberable
Watch out!! Lasagna Jim’s gonna try and split them cheeks.
Solo Loewe. Great one, is my absolute favorite. The original one with the orange flask. The others are not bad, but this one is king.
You can't go wrong with the classic boss. Always a good pick.
For warm weather, K from Dolce&Gabbana.
I use an Addis one. I don't know the scent name
calvin klein summer 2018 version or older which is extremely rare and hard to find and very expensive
not the summer one that sucks
Terre d'Hermès is good
James Bond 007 perfume.
