One-Cent Diapers

The attached picture is real, from a few years ago, showing an incorrect price of one cent for each package of diapers, at a major chain grocery store in the United States.

If you had a young baby and were looking to buy diapers, what would you do in this case?

A woman with a newborn saw this and immediately picked up 5 packages of diapers, leaving about 5 on the shelf. The cashier's scanner rang up the regular price (about $10 each) and the woman showed her this picture. The manager was immediately called. At first, he was confused, then told the cashier to charge the woman 5 cents... then he ran to the diapers on the shelf, took them all down, and told an employee to correct the price sign.. State law requires the store to honor the posted price.

As I understand British law the price tag isn't legally binding and shops can just say oops it's a mistake. But more often than not for cheap stuff they'll let it slip out of goodwill to get positive publicity. I suspect as long as you don't try and take the piss by buying the whole shelf they'll let it slip.

I once got a bottle of champagne for a few pounds after they mislabeled the whole shelf. They weren't going to sell me it until I started taking photos of the big sign and threatening to post online.

Yes. I once had a carpet cleaner ring up as $1.79 instead of $179.00 they made me have it saying it was a lesson for the department. I felt really bad.

Absolutely yes I would. If it was a shelf tag issue or a store computer issue. I'm not going to screw the cashier; it's not their fault. But otherwise yes.

Had a neat experience last February when I bought a new car. The General Manager of the dealership is a friend and she gave me a great deal on the car. Her associate typoed the deal giving me $1,000 under their invoice. The manager honored the price. I've now sent a family member and two friends who have bought cars there.

I would buy the whole shelf and take them to a homeless shelter and donate it to them. I'm sure they get babies in there

If I believed that it was incorrectly priced, I would ask for the price to be verified by a manager. I’m not a thief, and whether it was a genuine mistake, or a malicious employee, “buying” something for a ridiculous price like diapers for one cent is STILL stealing! Now, if a manager confirms that this is indeed the price… I would buy every one they had and donate them to an organization that helps the low wage mother’s of premature babies!

I would question the store as to why the item was so low-priced. They may be damaged, or the item might be expired, no longer available, etc. That said, I might buy it and see what the outcome is, and if it is safe enough to use, why not? If it eaen't nsafe at all--I'd call the store and report it, and then return it.

I would load up two shopping carts with diapers.

When my kids were little I used to put the diapers on the little shelf under the shopping cart. About half the time the cashier wouldn't notice them and we would get free diapers for the week.

Anyone would try to buy it but at checkout find out the real price and hear "sorry" than move on. I see prices in stores to good to be true all the time

Some stores here HAVE to allow it to be bought for the wrong price shown. But I was more pissed at something tagged $6 but actually charged $16
