How much is too much for an engagement ring?

I was thinking $150 maybe a bit low but $300 is definitely reasonable. I think $1000 and up is too much imho.

I really think it's relative to our budget but there's a lot of wisdom in my opinion to erring on the side of less extravagant costs for engagements and weddings.

As much as it's nice to create endearing memories and moments, there's a whole lifetime ahead to do that together, and the lasting quality of a memory isn't always about its extravagance so much as the deeper and sentimental meaning it holds for us.

We don't need to bankrupt ourselves to create a lasting memory filled with deep personal meaning.

So to me, it's relative to what you can afford. One litmus that I think is useful to ask yourself what would happen if you lost it. Would it be so devastating? Or could you replace it and find the replacement holding equal meaning? How much do you tie the meaning to the material vs. what it represents?

That's so true. This is why I wouldn't mind a ring as low as possible. Like $300 is reasonable to me and can be replaced vs 1000 or more. But I wouldn't be mad if he only spent $100 to 150 on it because rings don't mean that much to me. It's the thought that counts for me and he should do what he can afford.

I think that's a very good way of thinking about it. I have to admit that I lost my wedding ring twice now. I'm a very absent-minded person prone to misplace and lose things a lot. I even fancy the idea of a tattooing the wedding ring so that I can never lose it. 😅 But it has steered me away from very materialistic ways of thinking if only because I tend to lose things so often. 😂

It's a matter of personal taste and finances but I'd say nothing much under a few grand will cut it

I've had cheap 1ct solitaire rings that retailed for a few grand the 'polished gravel' stone will go back to the trade for half the market rate (£600) and the gold (usually 18kt will scrap probably at about £70-100)

As for the top side I haven't owned any but seen dealers with inventory worth £100k either side of £250k
Also a wealthy associate who's wife sports a sizeable (6ct because it doesn't fit into my fan gauge) perfect diamond that would run loose wholesale imem to some like me in the trade upwards of £500k (however to the man on the street in a shank from a serious supplier like Graff, Harry Winston or H. Stern... double comma in the price on the recept)

It really depends on your personal preference. I have a ring set on Etsy that was $100 per ring. Mine is 14k wrapped sterling silver with lab-made sapphire for the gemstone and I’m happy with it so far.

depends on how much he makes. My man makes 350k a year. If he proposes to me, I expect it to be at least 8k minimum. But if he made 35k a year, I would take a 1k-2k ring.
