Is Halloween a little over the top these days?

At Home Depot the whole front of the store is all Halloween decorations. they have larger than life sized animated figures and all kinds of skeletons, monsters and ghosts. I just wonder who buys this stuff. ?

I put up Halloween decorations abut I don't go nuts about it.

I just found out I am having surgery on Halloween. I am worried about how am I going to give out candy to the neighborhood kids?

I think it’s been taken over by the adults. But I still think it’s all harmless fun. Some people love to decorate their homes. But it’s beginning to be two holidays in one. There are the kids, innocently and beautifully dressing up to trick or treat. Then there are the adults dressing up and going to nightclubs, or private parties. They don’t really intermingle, because the adults don’t trick or treat. The teens do, often without dressing up. But they also have the eggs and TP, so you better give them something! But no I don’t think it’s over the top. I could see how a middle aged man might think so, because my dad thinks that too. But things change, that’s just the way of the world! Every time we went back to England, Dad would tell us what USED to be “there when I was your age”! The meaning of words migrate, things change, and holiday traditions are not immune to that change. When the government REQUIRES us to decorate for halloween… THEN it will have gone too far!

Halloween used to be one of my favorite days of fun (it's not really a holiday).

It's so over the top now that my kiddos are sick of it and have lost interest entirely. We buy candy for the trick or treaters (we don't care if they're old or young) and keep the light on, but that's about all.

There are two neighboring houses in my girlfriend’s pretty congested neighborhood, and they both are fully on board the “Giant Skeleton” train. And that shit gets put up on LABOR DAY.

There are a few houses in my area with them too. They seem to be a year-round thing too…. and I guess that makes sense because where would you store a skeleton as tall as your house?😂 So in a few months they’ll have giant Santa Claus outfits on and shit🤦‍♂️😂

I see it at Christmas too, these big blow-up lawn decorations. I think they look pretty tacky, personally. There used to be a guy in a town I used to live in who had his entire front lawn filled with them, easily three dozen of these things, conservatively. If you told me 50+, I’d believe it. NOBODY Christmases harder than that guy, lmao

I live near two homes with those stupid giant skeletons. One stays up year round and is missing arms from having fallen too many times during storms. Both get Santa hats at Christmas.

Yes! It's been co-opted by the adults and become a big money maker! Adult costume parties contests themed activities and all around in general participation has become a billion dollar industry. I read an article where the authors premise for the adult takeover was that USA Americans are so generally disillusioned that Halloween offers a chance at escapism and trying on different identities. Sadly, I agree with the author.

Having never celebrated it , its just not a thing in Australia , and they try to promote it here ( Thailand ) but they try and promote anything , I would enjoy the parties , especially if I were in my 20s ( Id still enjoy now ) , but I would not be handing out confectionary , I'm very much against promoting ( or continuing ) , these sugars are by far the most lethal legal of drugs and they continue to promote this stuff , so I could never take part in that , even if it were a thing.

Although the community element can be considered a positive , that part is nice , just a shame it promotes confectionary.

It’s a celebration meant for children. I’m not a child. Rarely I’ll just buy pumpkin spice coffee. But that’s where it ends.
On Halloween Day I’m generally at work. And nobody gets payed for the Holiday. 🙄

I prefer my country version of it. The Day Of The Dead in South America.

You make creepy bread dolls and you eat them with a weird warm strawberry drink. And you have to tell stories of those who passed in order to not forget them.

On top of their Christmas decorations. I don't think they are made to be left outside for long. The wind, rain, and sun will trash them within a couple of months - or sooner. They would be great lightning rods. Then they can light up without a power source. 😂😅

No, Halloween is WAY OVER THE TOP. Some stores started Halloween decorations and sales in August.

It needs to return to it's traditional roots. The modern version is a mockery and insult to those who respect the old ways. A barbecue in honour of the deceased would be far fitting.

there's quite a few houses where I live that do a full on haunted walk in their yard, with fog, strobe lights, and other lighting effects, plus mechanical and live characters. It's fun to go to but I cannot imagine storing all of those props. So many houses have that 12 ft skeleton and today I saw one with a skeleton dog friend, too. Again, no idea where people are storing this stuff.

It used to be fun when I was growing up. All the kids met and hot our street for the next 5 blocks. Now, it’s lost that. Most parents just buy candy for their kids and stay inside.

My nephews used to love it when they were little now as teenagers don't care. My nieces love Halloween since they are both 9 and 7 years old. I used to like Halloween as a kid but as an adult don't care for the decorations. I seen tons of houses already decorated for next month and some go all out with the Halloween stuff.

Every year the front of Home Depot is crowded with skeletons and other things Halloween, and every year it sells so well that they prepare next year's orders for possibly more. Some people put aside a lot of money for just Halloween!

The holiday is October 31. The commercial Halloween season begins mid-August. And the rest of the world just goes along with industry and buys crazy stuff for Halloween. And then people complain about holidays being too commercialized.
