I guess my grandfather had an effect on me. He lived through the Great Depression as a young man. I used to think he was crazy for saving things like string and repairing everything he owned. Now, I've had a change of view.

We live in a consumption based economy. Many thing are purposely designed to be unrepairable. And people have lost the skills and the time to repair things. It has become OK to simply throw stuff away and go buy a cheap replacement. That results in huge volumes of trash going into landfills every day. Not good.

So I've adopted a minimalist mindset.

    • Less is stuff better. Less clutter. Less upkeep. Less of my time required. I'm trying to throttle back my consumerism.
    • When stuff breaks I will try to repair it. There's a certain satisfaction from successfully making something broken work again.
    • When I buy stuff I consciously look for things that have spare and repair parts available whenever possible.
    • I buy stuff built to last whenever I can.

It turns out my grandfather wasn't crazy. He just looked at "things" differently. Today's disposable culture would probably have depressed him.

Depends on how bad the damage is, as well as the price of replacing vs repairing

I always try and fix it. After a while it usually cannot be fixed anymore and must be replaced.
