Is it okay to give my boyfriend money for his birthday ?

I can hardly save .. because my family is not very rich, however I managed to save 200 bucks.. and I was thinking that in stead of getting him something he might or might not use ..maybe its better to give him the money so he can add some more to them and get a mobile or laptop.. I know he wants them badly .. But I kinda feel it's awkward.. should I stick to a gift anyway ? Any ideas what to get him ?

He doesn't wear watches ( plus that they cost a lot more than I have ) .. I gave him a 150 bucks wallet last birthday..

I was also thinking to get him a silver necklace.. He doesn't wear them.. but he mentioned long time ago that his mom really wants him to wear a necklace .. and I recall that he said he would only wear it if I got it for him ... so is this a better idea ?

I wouldn't give him money as it's a little impersonal, but you could always get him a gift card for a place that sells laptops and then maybe find a birthday card or blank card with a laptop picture on it and write him a note saying how you wish you had the money to get him one, but since you can't you wanted to at least help give him a head start. It could show you at least put some thought into something that you know he'd like.

I'd feel awkward too. Money isn't personal. But it is the best choice usually. If you're going to give him money then put in the card something like "to help buy you that phone/computer you want." A necklace would be a good idea but it sounds like he wouldn't wear it that much.

You can hardly save, you're kinda poor or at least not rich...I think you can use that $200 for something more useful. If you can't afford it, don't go with out just so he can have birthday money. that's not very smart. Buy him an inexpensive (less than 50-70) gift

no! I usually only ever want money because I'll buy what I want but maybe with Boyfriend and Girlfriend it's different

i wouldn't give me boyfriend money and I also think it would be strange for them if I'd give them money but if he is saving money for a phone or a laptop it is probably a good idea! probably just tell him when you give it him that you were thinking that giving him money so that he can buy what he really wants was a better idea than buying something he probably will not use
