Haunted States: The Scariest Urban Legends (H-L)

Here is part one if you missed it.

Welcome to part two! Some of my absolute favourite stories are on this list. Have a better one? Share it! And enjoy.

Hawaii: The Kaimuki House

Although the house was torn down in 2016, the Kaimuki House is said to have been the most haunted house in Hawaii. Within the house, there was said to reside a creature known as a Kasha – a man-eating ghost who terrorised many of the home’s residents over the years with its insatiable hunger for blood and corpses. During one incident, the police were called by neighbours who could hear banging and screams and when the cops showed up, they witnessed children being hurled and levitated across the house by an invisible force.

Idaho: The Water Babies of Massacre Rocks

Just outside of Pocatello, Idaho is a spot known as Massacre Rocks which was once inhabited by Native Americans. The story goes that during this time, there was an intense famine and the people could not feed themselves, never mind any new mouths and so mothers took it upon themselves to drown their children as an act of mercy, as not to have them starve to death. The legend says that the children survived on tadpoles and they themselves grew fins and gills and turned into water babies and if you approach the water’s edge you can hear them crying and laughing.

Illinois: Homey the Clown

Not a ghost but I couldn’t pass up on the opportunity to talk about this urban legend. Now, I can pinpoint two people who aided in the creation of this legend. There was a sketch show in the early 90’s called ‘In Living Color’ which featured a character called Homey D. Clown, an ex con who worked as a clown. In the 1970’s, serial killer John Wayne Gacy (from Chicago) killed up to 34 men and buried them in a crawl space under his house and in his spare time liked to dress up as Pogo the Clown. So it’s easy to see that the combination may have created an urban legend that was rife in the Chicago in the 90’s that there was a clown named Homey, trying to lure kids into his run down van so he could rape them.

Indiana: The Culbertson Mansion

Built in 1967 and struck by lightning in 1888, the Culbertson mansion has been a place marred by tragedy throughout its history. The lightning strike caused a fire which killed all those within and the building was left an empty shell until the 1930’s where finally, the Webb family finally moved in. The head of their household was Dr. Webb, a well respected local physician who opened his own practice within the home. Once settled, the Webb children began to complain of dark figures lurking around the house and the banging of chains, disembodied screams and other unexplainable noises.

The sounds were coming from beneath the house, followed by horrible smells and Dr. Webb investigated the lower levels, seemingly finding nothing. On September 29th of 1934, after the doctor and his family had not been seen for days, the police entered the home and found the entire household had been slaughtered. Beneath the house, the police found more remains, that of Dr. Webb’s patients who had gone missing and it turned out the smells and sounds the children heard were that of those he’d killed.

Iowa: The Ghost Children of Iron Hill

According to local legend, in the 1920’s on a stretch of track near Charles City, there was a terrible train crash. The carriages caught fire and the story goes that one of the passenger carts was full of orphans, who perished, screaming and trapped within the burning ruin. To this day, hikers in the area near the site of the crash report smells of charred wood and flesh and some have witnessed a little girl in white carrying a burned doll.

Kansas: Hamburger Hill

Legend tells not to stray too far from the hiking trails around Hutchinson, Kansas for fears that you may encounter the hamburger man. While it’s not quite clear if the hamburger man of hamburger hill is a ghost or a horribly mutilated hermit, either way he has been a local legend since the 1950’s and if he catches you with his hook, he grinds you down to hamburger meat.

Kentucky: Waverly Hills Sanatorium

Waverly Hills opened in 1910 and throughout the years an estimated 6000 people died here so it’s easily one of the most famous haunted hospitals of the United States and is a place infamous for its ghost stories. Room 502 is said to be haunted by a nurse who go pregnant out of wedlock and decided to hang herself within the room, another nurse committed suicide by throwing herself from the roof after working in room 502. The fourth floor is said to be the biggest hotspot for paranormal activity, featuring a little girl with no eyes and then there is Timmy, a young boy who plays with balls and has been seen rolling them along the ground for visitors.

Louisiana: St Louis Cemetery No.1

Unsurprisingly, cemetery’s can be very haunted places, especially the older ones and St Louis Cemetery No. 1 is the oldest burial ground in New Orleans. As the land of New Orleans is swampy and marsh-like, digging a grave in this kind of soil can be impractical, as witnessed by those that tried to establish a cemetery on St. Peter’s within the city and the caskets simply floated to the top and popped out of the ground due to the frequent floods. The solution was to avoid burials altogether and instead house the dead in tombs above ground and thus, St Louis No.1 was born.

Haunted States: The Scariest Urban Legends (H-L)

As it is old, it is home to some ghosts who are unabashed about interacting with mourners and curious ghost hunters, the most famous of those spirits being Marie Laveau the Voodoo Queen. Though many leave trinkets and gifts at the site of her tomb to try and curry favour from her, Laveau

is frequently seen quite angry and storming around the grave sites, chanting curses as she goes and sometimes transforming into a black crow or a large black dog – both seen regularly around the site.

Another famous resident of the cemetery is a sad soul named Alphonse, seen stealing flowers from other graves to place upon his own and warning visitors to stay away from the Pinhead vault. Sometimes he will be seen crying or will take your hand within his ice cold ones and give you a smile before disappearing.
