DRAGONS AND IF THEY COULD EXIST

Dragons are typically considered mythical, fantasy and imaginary but in this document I will go over reasons to why there is the possibility of a dragon one day coming to existence if it does not already exist.

Okay, starting off from my beginning. Dragons do have some characteristics that we wouldn't expect to be possible like scales that cannot be penetrated by a metal arrow that is larger than the bow that is firing it, source being "The Hobbit: Desolation of Smaug" and although this may be true, we can still agree that there is animals with tough armour such as Rhinos and if we went down the reptilian family tree then what about crocodiles, alligators and Monitor lizards all of which have scales or plates of armour that are either tough or reinforced.

This proves that through evolution there is the possibility of strengthened skin that could deflect a degree of damage to an extent of course, it isn't like you could shoot a arrow that is roughly 2 meters in length with heavy twisted steel heads, combining elements of both spears and harpoons, this would quite obviously kill it.

-_-

Boi.

Look, we can definitely bring up the fact that Alligators and Crocodilians both have tough skins but not so strong to keep it against super sharp objects.

Anyways, I'm heading off topic sorry..

The concept of a fire breather is also believe it or not, possible... If approaching this thought scientifically then it is plausible. . . Wait here while I go down for some spare room..

Okay,

So the idea of a fire breather. It's possible and here is why.. We need a animal that could use electricity first, bear with..

Okay, the Electric Stingray can produce a 45 Volt shock so we have the animal with the capability of electrical emission.

The electric catfish, however, also uses its more powerful current to stun prey and to defend itself when it is attacked by predators. The electric catfish can generate a powerful charge up to 350 volts so that should suffice.

Now we need a animal that has the capability of using gas... This was a tricky one but I noticed that all animals create natural FLAMMABLE gas through diet and if we consider this, methane is flammable, so if we put the idea of a animal that can generate a sufficient level of voltage as the spark or "Igniter" and at the same time have the ability to provide self gas emissions then the ability to breath fire would be plausible, however...

The inside of the animals mouth would have to be protected against any burns so the inside of the mouth would have to have some sort of special skin that maybe secretes a thin layer of fluid on the inside of the mouth so that the flames evaporate the liquid but do not burn the skin?

Also, unlike in folklore and fantasies, this animal no matter how large it is, would not be able to breath flames an further than about 1 meter top as when a gas is lit, the ignition is rapid and there is no chance that you could spread gas across half a town or set fire to a whole house in a blink of a eye.

To do that, the animal would have to be in a stationary position, secreting the flammable gas continuously till the gas was coating the building then ignite it with he electrical properties however gas would of been carried away by the wind by then so let's assume that the top distance would be 1m and that is because I am going to explain the following:

1-How the fire will be spread

2-How it will safely spread

3-Why the animal wouldn't use it often

1- HOW WILL THE FIRE BE SPREAD?

The fire will be spread through the ability to secrete gas and ignite at will with electrical properties, most likely that the animal will have either a nerve attached to the underside of the tongue that gives off electrical impulses strong enough to generate sufficient voltage or the ignition will be caused by the skin giving off electrical impulse on the outside of the mouth.

2- HOW IT WILL BE SAFELY SPREAD?

The safe spreading of the fire is simple really, my hypothesis is that since everything can manifest flammable gas then why not a animal that evolves that to use and generate that gas in two or even four glands in a convenient area for such a animal like the neck or jaw area where the travel of the gas will not take long and additionally if the flames needed to go further maybe the animal could seal off the gas gland area so it gets pressurized then release it while igniting. This is why it wouldn't make sense for it to still be stored in the gut as well.

3- WHY THE ANIMAL WOULDN'T USE THIS OFTEN?

My reason behind why the animal could not simply spew this around at will is that the gas would, like most things, take some time to actually create and therefore the animal would always use the fire in small amounts but never use all of it in case it needs it later on.

It would most likely only use this ability for defense but possibly also for courtship by displaying largest flames, furthest flames or maybe even setting fire to objects to make them look appealing to the opposite gender perhaps..

Anyways.. Due to the information that I have provided in this document it should be apparent that Dragons could exist in the evolutionary future.
