What does it mean if a man says "you're a breath of fresh air" during conversation?

Someone said this to me recently and I tried using this as proof that he liked me. My older, male friend whom I spoke to about it was more damning. The conversation went…

Me: “He said I was like a breath of fresh air, a shaft of light in an otherwise dreary day.”

Friend: “So other than an air freshener and a window, what exactly are you to him?”

I like to think it was a bit more than that though.

He probably likes you, I wouldn't read too much into it but he likes you enough to want to talk to you. :)

Thanks, he shows interest in me in general and he dropped this one among other compliments.. we'll see how it goes! I think that some men can't always express what they exactly feel so they try to find more subtle ways to show it...

First of all, thank you SO much for getting the difference between "you're" and "your" right!

Secondly, I guess it would depend on the context. Are most of the women he associates with boring, immature, etc? If so, maybe he's able to hold a good conversation with you and it's a fresh experience for him. Or maybe you just have a different vibe about you than most other women.

It could also mean he's interested, but I would have to know what other specific things happened/were said that might make you think such.

False use of "your" is something I hate too, thanks! Yeah I think he usually doesn't have the chance to make interesting conversations with other women, so I guess that's why he said that...

Either it means you're different in a good way from all the women he meets or he says that to all the women he meets to make them feel special.

It means a new way of thinking not a part of the norm. Fresh as in a fresh set of eyes on an old problems. Different perspective.
