What does it mean: "Give, but give until it hurts"?

I was just reading quotes and that one i don't really get, why does it have to hurt? i dont get it

It could mean that when you start giving you give away the things that don't mean much to you but when it "hurts" you're giving away the things that you mean something to you. When it says "give until it hurts" it means when you start giving things that mean something to you you can stop giving

This can be called obsession. Yeah, this is a good word. When you're obsessed, nothing matters.
