I think the creature often requires some features that we can relate to as human in some respects, like a human baby.

For example, it might be harder to consider something cute that doesn't have bilateral symmetry, like an octopus. Probably anything that has an exoskeleton is generally going to be excluded for most, like a scorpion.

Maybe it's also helpful if it feels nice to the touch, is docile and not aggressive, looks sweet and innocent, etc -- something that triggers an instinct for us to want to hold it, cuddle with it.
