When you see the Hoover Dam, what thoughts cross your mind?

Here are some facts about the Dam:
1. It Was built during the Great Depression and named after former president Herbert Hoover
2. This dam contains enough concrete to stretch across America
3. It helps powers 3 states: Nevada, California, and Arizona providing sustenance to nearly 20 million people and large areas of farmland
4. It took more than 10,000 people to build the dam, and more than 100 people died during its construction.
5. Hoover Dam has a power capacity of 1,345 megawatts. In one year it can create 4.2 billion KWh (kilowatt hours).
6. Lake Mead is the name of the reservoir at Hoover Dam. It is the largest (by volume) reservoir in the United States.

i liked parachuting off of it in GTA 3 San Andreas.

but in real life it's a marvel to look at. the size and scope of it is insane... and more knowing how much water it provides. just the idea that it powers nearly a 1/3 of public utilities in california, 1/4 in Nevada and areas of Arizona is crazy to think about...

oh and it cost (in today dollars) about $700 million dollars. compare that with a potential $20billion wall that will serve faaar fewer people

A few years ago, I wouldn't have really paid much attention to dams, but having seen the Aswan Dam in Egypt, I would have to say that they are truly remarkable pieces of engineering, and I now would make a detour to see one, especially one like the Hoover Dam.

I don't know where it is located but it reminds me of ancient egypt in a way in some photographs because it looks mysterious and intelligently designed (of course intelligently designed by humans none the less).

I walked across it in 2010 with my ex. It is an astonishing place - the power lines going straight DOWN, the huge generating station at the bottom, and this is back when the interstate bypass was still being built so there was a lot of traffic.
