How come we don't call hardcore sports fans nerds?

They SHOULD be considered nerds, lol.

A "nerd" can describe someone who is super into a field or hobby. The only reason hardcore sports fans aren't commonly considered nerds is that sports are traditionally considered "manly", while the other stuff isn't.

But if I remember correctly, Kobe Bryant himself even describes himself as a basketball nerd. Besides just being a pro player before he retired, he studied and watched and analyzed a lot of basketball, knows a lot of basketball history, and --- during his career --- was often known to choose studying/practicing basketball over his personal friendships and relationships.

If being a "sports nerd" is a real thing to Kobe, it should be a real thing to everyone else too, lol.

I do actually. All the time. However I think the reason for it despite the fact that they do fit the definition of being single minded in their chosen field/hobby, its generally viewed as more acceptable then say gaming or comics and as such doesn't get the label as Nerd was originally derogatory in nature.

Nerds can be attractive sometimes, and sports fans can be unattractive. And lots of them argue/obsess over the technical aspects of the games they are fans of like one might do with chess or video games

Sports, until recently, had been more machismo and less mathematical.

Intellectual ability hasn't become a part of sports until recently... nothing can be considered "nerdy" without an intellectual element to said topic.

Because nerd has a connotation of high intelligence, sports fans' intelligence only eclipses other people's knowledge when it comes to sports. Useless knowledge vs applicable knowledge, that's the difference.

I would never call a sport fan a nerd because they way I see it, nerd has a damn good connotation and am happy to be called a nerd by people. Lets me know that I am actually going to be somewhere in life.
