Belisa Vranich, a clinical psychologist who specializes in alcohol addiction, said that in many cases alcohol doesn't actually speak for the drunken person, but gives the person the confidence to say things he normally wouldn't.

Alcohol affects the top of the brain known as the cerebral cortex, which is what makes a person more likely to act and speak in ways he or she may not when sober, Vranich said.

This can lead to something innocent, like being more funny or more quiet, or it can lead to aggressive behavior and a loss of sexual discretion.

"There's usually some version of one's true feelings that come out when one is drunk," Vranich said.

"People dredge up feelings and sentiments from somewhere deep in their brains, so what one says or does certainly reflects what's going on deep down. There's a lot of truth to that ancient Latin saying, 'in vino, veritas.' Alcohol can most definitely act as a truth serum -- something that allows people to say what is truly on their mind."

"I don't accept that because one does not explode in the tirade that he came forth unprovoked without believing in the thoughts that he expressed," he says.

"Alcoholics will tell you that they try to watch what they say when they are drunk, but that's a conundrum because alcohol frees the tongue to say what is in the heart," he adds.

No. It is a stupidity serum.
While on one hand, it does lower reservations, making one more open to being bluntly honest about things they would normally keep to themselves, it also impairs thinking, which means thoughts that normally would have gone through several layers of self analysis and filtering just skip on by and come right out. Hence, you get drunk people saying things they would never say when sober, because they would never THINK them when sober.

No. Some people may become more relaxed and forthcoming when drunk, but it's not the alcohol alone that influences it. If someone doesn't want to tell you something, they won't just because you gave them a few shots.

I don't really get drunk ! I stay sober until I black out from intoxication. It might be bad, because I won't know how drunk I really am. But I can count the drinks. XD

Not necessarily. Peoples "walls" and defenses go down and most talk more, but they can still be lies. Just depends on the person.
