Normally the dipstick will have markings for "full" and "1 quart less than full" and usually it's long enough to show most or all of another quart. That's going to give you some idea of how much to add.

Depending on the level reading, add one pint or quart, wait then recheck level. Add accordingly

All depends on what the dipstick is saying. You don't always add the same amount all the time just because it's low.
