I did it yesterday, as a matter of fact. But I made it much easier on myself - I don't even need tools.
I put one of these in all my vehicles:

It's a Fumoto-brand oil drain plug that has a valve in it, and it also has a clear hose that snaps onto the nipple to drain the used oil right into a 2-gallon oil jug. I pop on the hose, pop off the little plastic lock (not shown) and flip the lever, and the used oil goes right in the jug without spilling a drop. For the filter, I loosen it by hand, then slip a zip-lock back over it and remove it, catching any oil in the zip-lock.

It makes the whole job super easy, and no mess.
There are drain plugs for nearly every car, including cars that need a 90-degree plug. Once you install it, you never need to remove your drain plug again. I've never had one leak in over 20 years.
Mine and everybody else's but if it's a girl that I'm going to do it for a teacher exactly how to do it and what's going on and why you do what you do because I'm tired of doing it for them and they want to learn so I'm going to teach them and to be honest it's better than taking it to Jiffy Lube because one out of every 30 cars I think they leave that oil plug out I've known three people that took the cards at Jiffy Lube and they ran the car out of oil because they didn't put the plug-in right or the filter on right so these girls need to learn how to do it themselves it's very simple
I do it for my old cars that don't have any more warranties. It's so much easier for me because we have lifts in our garage. I actually don't mind doing it. I replace the oil filter as well. When I'm done, I'll simply call a guy we know who'll pick up the used oil & filter.
Of course, I make an appointment and have someone else do it for me. Thus I changed the oil myself, rather than having someone else make the appointment for me.
Seriously though, I'd have no clue how to do it... I am not very handy or mechanical at all.
Thanks for MHO

no but I slipped on some oil once
Many times. I started driving over 50 years ago and learned how to work on my own cars. I changed my own oil and also replaced brakes, spark plugs and even alternators, distributors, and starters. I haven't done it for 40 years because I had a job for 30 years that supplied me with a company car with all fuel and maintenance paid for. Since I've been retired, I've just taken my car to Jiffy Lube or sometimes to a mechanic I know for oil changes. They also check and top off all the other fluids at the same time. It's no muss, no fuss, and inexpensive. But I could do it if I had to.
Yes. I have serviced my own vehicles several times, I've even changed brake pads and replaced an exhaust, although more recently now I have disposable income I take it to a friend who runs a local garage. My next DIY project is to rebuild the engine on my old motorbike (400cc V4 Honda).
Nope. I've changed plenty of other parts (alternators, brake pads/discs/calipers, various sensors, gaskets and suspension components, etc) but never bothered with the oil - and never had any issue that could be in any way attributable to bad oil either. My cars have always lasted well over 200k miles, and it's generally rust that kills them (I live by the sea). Modern-ish engines are practically bombproof anyway (I suspect really modern low displacement ones probably aren't).
I use to all the time when it was cheaper to change your own oil , until I realized just having a garage do it was easier and convenient and pretty much the same price , But if I have to do it I can do it , it can be a pain in the ass if you don’t have the right tools as well and if the weather is crappy , so I just have a garage do it nowadays
With my first car I almost always changed the oil and oil filter when it was under my ownership. I also changed the tires, air filters , the brake pads and flushed out the radiator several times. I also changed the spark plugs and the battery when needed.
These are some basic things every man should know.
No. Even my father doesn't do it because most cars need service lift to dismantle covers below oil pan which are common nowadays. There is a oil filter that should be changed together with oil and the question what do with old oil.
Yea. Why would I pay a shop to use crap oils and filters?
I do most of my car repairs. Unless it's covered by warranty. I'll replace whatever part is broken myself. Except tires. Because there isn't much reason to do it myself.
Lol dealerships used factory parts just fyi
You can use OEM parts at home to. I use those or higher quality third party parts. There isn't anything special about dealership mechanics. They're just an option if you can't do the work yourself.
Changing the oil and oil filter is on of the easiest maintenance tasks that you can do yourself, I taught all my sisters how to do it, check you vehicles hand book or a Haynes manual for the correct grade of oil and the replacement filter or check in your auto parts store,
It’s more and more difficult with the newer vehicles - you have to remove a bunch of plastic underneath just to get to the oil filter and oil drain. If I had my own garage, I would do it myself but I get a pretty good deal when I have it done at the dealer or shop now. It’s $40 for the oil anyway and the labor is only $25 so it’s worth it to have it done by a professional
I performed all of the oil changes in my cars and motorcycles until a serious motorcycle accident several years ago made too uncomfortable to continue.
I had a vehicle that I owned for 209000 miles and changed the oil myself every 5000 miles. One time I was traveling and paid to have it done, but that's 40 oil changes I did on just one vehicle! Between my cars and my wifes cars I'm sure I've done it hundreds of times
I just recently stopped doing it. I had a hip replacement and I cannot crawl around on the ground yet. Besides, having it done at the garage costs about the same now that the price of motor oil is 35 bucks for 5 quarts plus a oil filler.
I have not.
My husband learned the other day to change the oil and somehow that meant that I was the one under the car taking the filter off... but no, I've never done the whole process.
Yeah, although these days I have the garage do it as part of the cars servicing.
i can even Change diff and gearbox oil - go me 😂😂
(okay my ex wife showed me 😂)
I've changed the oil and the engine and the transmission, and just about everything else on a car. I was out working on the brakes a couple of hours ago.
I used to, in the 70s and 80s. Cars made after that time became too complicated to work on, and it seemed I always had to buy new tools for each car.
Changing the oil on newer cars really isn’t all that complicated. Unless you’re driving a Tesla or something like that
That may be, but the last car I tried changing the oil on, I had to crawl UNDER the engine face-up, reach all the way up to get to the oil filter, and use a new oil filter wrench (my old wrench didn’t fit for the newer filters) to get it off. After that, I figured the auto makers simply didn’t want me changing the oil anymore.
Im here to take notice in the shared interest of Subaru 👋
Yes exactly. Especially with the known oil issues. Gotta keep on top of it that's for sure
That’s only an issue for the older ones really. Some goes for head gaskets.
@StrikeJam as long as you’re still using the 0w- 20, should be fine, kind unnecessary to change it every 3,000 miles instead of every 6,000 miles but it won’t hurt it. You’ll still just want to make sure that you are rotating the tires every 6k. The cross hatching in the cylinders causing the consumption issues was resolved back in 2014. The 2019 forester was the first year they switched to the new Subaru Global Platform. The biggest issue with that car is getting the head unit updated because of connectivity issues with your cellphone
Long time ago, yes, back when engine compartments were much simpler. Now, I leave all car maintenance to the experts. I will check things, like coolant, oil, and fluid levels, but that's about it.
Let's put it this way I've never paid someone else to change my oil Unless somehow it was done with something else but I think I've done every f****** oil change on every vehicle I've ever owned while I owned them
Fiancé does it, but Dad mad me learn right along with the boys as we grew up. I wasn't always interested, but I have done it a time or two.
No, just topped it off. I leave changing fluids to a mechanic because they get paid to do it, whereas I get confused.
Not on my own vehicle, no. I’ve changed oil and done other maintenance on plenty of National Guard trucks though.
Nope. Paying other people to do it at Take 5 Oil saves me time and money in the long run. Just not worth it to me.
I worked at a gas station, as a truck mechanic, used to do a lot of work on my dump trucks.
It's not hard to learn.
I have a lift at my house, so that makes it easier to do.
I take my car to the dealership.

Yes, but only once. It was on a 1997 Chevy blazer. After that, I always had someone do it. Less risk of mistakes. Plus on the current car I own, it's incredibly difficult to change the oil..
It's actually easy but you need a couple of tools and space.
Oh yes. Its a basic maintenance task thst everyone who owns a vehicle should know how to do.
hahahahahaaa what is this "oil" of which you speak?
I never do it for my own vehicle, but I helped as a kid.
Oil, brakes, tires, filters and various interior/motor parts.
My father made sure I could take care of my car. I used to do it all the time. I haven't since I had spinal surgery last year though.
Yeah my parent's old VW Wagon and overfilled it and blew the line, never again lol
Yes but not on my current vehicle. I have a Ford Ranger and the oil filter is hard to get to. Plus time is a thing I don't have much of right now so sadly I pay to have it done.
Yeah I was changing my oil in my own vehicles since I was 16 years old and only recently have I been bringing it to a shop because it’s free because I have a new car
Millions of times. I even replaced engines and transmissions
No really, I use to work for a garage eons ago
nope but I might give it a try next time it's needed...
last few cars we got free oil changes for life as part of our negotiations.
I think I have. I used to change anti freeze. I change oil on my mowers. I guess I should let you heman amazon women do it to let oil cover all your manly tattoos.
@exitseven my truck and car are from 1980's
I have, yes, and so has Mrs. But I'd much rather experienced professionals at the garage did it.
Yes. It was very common to do that yourself when I was young.
I’ve rebuilt engines, so yeah oil changes are no biggie
My car has the easiest oil filter change in the world and oil changes are really easy too so I do it myself.
I have never paid somebody to change my oil and only once to work on my eengine because I can't lean over that long anymore
Yes, but then you have to find a place that will take the oil. By the time it's all said and done, it's not worth the time or money for me.
Mine, my wife's, my parents, did a friend's a time or two. Anymore it only save like ten dollars to do it yourself so I pay for it to get done.
My car has a 7 year warranty. To make the warranty last, I have to take it every 15000km for a review. In this revision they change the oil.
Many times. I used to do a lot of my own car maintenance
Yes, but not for a long time. Now I take it to a shop as I don't really have a place to do so.
I haven't gotten to the point where I needed to yet.
I have changed oil in lawn mowers up to locomotives.
So, yes’!
how much used oil from trains? What did you do with used oil?
i don't even have a car. i would like to think i won't have too have one
I have, but most of the time I pay for the convenience of having someone else do it.
Many times. With a couple mistakes, like take out the oil plug before the oil filter.
Remember if I can do it you can do it. Thanks for Watching
Yeah seeing as I'm a mechanic definitely have done many times
Yeah but i rather have juffy lube do it incase i mess up i have someone to blame
Not yet but I have changed the battery and recharged the AC.
Yup. Centuries ago when carburetors were still used.
