Young people listening to old music?

Question

Okay by young I mean 16+ as this site would suggest.

And though I'm not implying people who absolutely ignore modern music, as in last few years, but that don't really own or listen to it more than once a month on their own choosing.

I'm 23 and I listen to 80s music, essentially anything past 96 is foreign to me, I often get the "why do you listen to that music" but I just think as an educated musician there's a higher level of talent than the generic hip-hop that has become so popular today.

Not a vote on what good music is, just a simple question, to reiterate:

16-30 year olds listening to music 20+ years old.

i find myself asked daily  why do I listen to old music! I think todays music(not all) is run by people who act as puppet masters towards musicans! not to mention the use of auto tune and lyrics with no meaning "f*** bitches get money"  "i whip my hair back and forth" "party in the usa" I love and have always appreciated classic rock,blues,metal and its just my own individual prefernce! but also the fact the music I listen to has stood the test of time,has lyrical meaning,talented musicians, and musicians who make music for the love of it not for the money and fame! I love blue oyster cult,april wine,the doors,pink floyd,triumph,blue cheer,zeppelin,the moody blues,stevie ray vaughan,cactus,fam jam,trooper,ccr,kansas,cream,boston,iron butter fly etc and some good metal bands!

Well, I think that music is more mass-produced now that it was in the past. It's less about talent or coming out with something new and original, it's about profit.

There are tons of untalented musicians out there---but they look good, are readily moldable, and their voices/music can be edited so it sounds decent enough and its catchy. But even musicians who do have a lot of natural talent will often "sell out" (not meaning to sound like a music snob) by changing their music to better appeal to the masses and thus sell more records.

Though, I would say that I think there are people in every generation who compare music from their generation to music to previous generations and think, "They just don't make music like they used to."

For me, it depends on what kind of songs appeal to you.  Its an individual's preference and it got nothing to do with age because songs are ageless.   Some people are generally drawn to songs that have soothing music and meaningful lyrics, while others just like to listen to upbeat songs.  I say most songs from the 80s are indeed good songs.  Personally, I listen to oldies, the 80s, new songs and if the song has a catchy tune or nice lyrics, I listen to them as well.

The way I think, whoever likes whatever, it's their choice. But surely, kids of today are at loss. I'll take some random names now: Just sit and listen to lyrics of a song by Neil Diamond or Peter Cetera or Billy Joel or Eagles or Scorpions or Journey or Foreigner... and then listen to anyone from last 10-15 yrs; I can't even recall names because they are so forgettable. Just yesterday we were listening to something by Bruno Mars and I said to my wife "We are saying this is a good song, but just imagine, this is just as good AS IT CAN GET now". Pity ! I have so much pity for the new generation.

I'm 29 and I listen to music from classical, 1950s (Mostly blues, early rock), tones of 1960s (Beatles being one of my favorite bands), 70s 80s 90s 00s. I range from bands like Sepultura and Slayer to Dido and even the odd Brittany Spears (I really like Toxic). I mostly hover around soft rock.

I can't understand why people would want to listen to music from X era or decade. Why should it matter? Just listen to what you like.

For what it's worth, I'm currently listening to Powderfinger.

My favorite musical decade is the 80s. The warmth and innocence of their music is simply a joy to experience. I also like stuff from the 60s, a few songs from the 70s, and songs from the very early 90s. I've even gained an appreciation for some of the music I grew up listening to in the mid-late 2000s, like Bubbly, Chasing Cars, Hey There Delilah etc. so I guess it's really true what they say about nostalgia...

I went through a phase in which all I listened to was classic rock from from the 70s and 80s. Today's stuff doesn't take much talent, anyone can scream into a microphone, and any can auto-tune their voice and instruments. I still don't favor much of today's junk, although here and there I find something catchy.  So, I think it's just fine for younger people to listen to music that came out before they were born. Too bad that's still a minority in today's generation :/

I'm twenty, and since I was born I've been listening to music from all genre's and era's. I listen to anything from opera and classical to hardcore punk and metal. I love music from the fourties, fifties, sixties, seventies, eighties, nineties etc. I don't listen to music like modern pop and rap, but I like a lot of current bands.

i listen mostly to 60s folk,  alternative& hip hp, jazz, classical which is like 100s of years old, the most recent ill listen to is 90s. WHY because modern music sucks ass, not just lack of content crappy melody people who can't sing but now its all machine run and synthesized, completely unoriginal & lacking authenticity, content, purpose message, talent intelligence, quality overall sucks so I don't bother listening,

Im 16 and grew up to listening to "oldies rock" or "classic rock" : Led Zepplin, KISS, Aero Smith, Guns and Roses,queen, AC/DC and so many others.  I listen to all types of music, and my friends also question why I listen to oldies rock. Oldies music has a true story to tell unlike the music now a days.

I personaly like mostly 90's and 80's music. A few songs in the early 00's where pretty cool but now it just seems like everyone is a copy cat artist. Their seems to be no originality. My Uncle use to be a DJ from the mid 80's to the late 90's. He told me before that a band or artist usual makes their best music on their first album because they are playing from their heart. Yet after their first album there main goal is to just stay relevant so they can stay on the radio.

do you consider classical symphonies old music?  I love symphony music like beethoven and nutcracker music.  I also like musicals like moulin rouge and phantom of the opera.  I think piano music is awesome.

Listening to old music is not all that bad. It's not only about the fact that you want to evolve with the trend. Sometimes, you got to listen to some old stuff that reminds you of some memories.
It's not good to stick to the past, but visiting some relics from the past has its own benefits.
There are some ways listening to old music could be beneficial to your productivity.
And by the way, that nostalgia...

I am a musician and I enjoy all types of music. From Little Wayne to the Eagles. I think artists from before I was born have more talent then today's artists. They actually play real instruments not beats on a computer. However the majority of people who listen to new popular music don't have any musical knowledge so they don't understand why young people listen to old music.

I'm seventeen, and the only "modern music" I listen to is indie rock, and electronic/dance music. I really love 80's music, and old 60's rock. Commercial pop & hiphop/rap now is just a joke.
