If a guy you are seeing says you are smothering him, then what is the best plan of action?

We get on well and have a lot of things in common. We have known each other for a long time but only recently started seeing each other. He was always full on with me in the first few weeks, emailing all the time during work, texting a lot at night. He wanted to see me once during the working week and every weekend. Then his parents came for a week and everything changed during and after that time. Yesterday I got a text saying he is confused as we have a lot in common but that he doesn't think things are going so well. He says he feels smothered and think that mainly comes because I have too much time on my hands. The latter is true I currently have no job and have not had one for a year. I have applied to many but just have had no luck. Before when we first started seeing each other he was the one to say that he wanted us to travel together, he wanted me to go to Canada next year as his best friend is getting married, he wanted to start a B&B with me, etc and now he tells me the above. I text him to say I will back off but I feel sad because why was he so full on in the beginning and now it feels he is not nice at all. Please I need some male advice. I am in my mid 30's so would prefer guys in their 30's to answer.

He texted me today at 14:00 to ask me how my day was. I waited 1 hour before I responded. After 1.5 hours he responded with an impersonal text and I then responded with an impersonal text. Straightaway he responded with another impersonal text.

I have not responded to that one as he asks me nothing. Before we always spent weekends together but last weekend I was away. I was hoping we would spend this weekend together but he has made no mention of it at all.

Anyone in their mid to late 20's or 30's may respond. Maybe there are some girls out there who have also experienced this and can give me some tips.

So I have backed off like. Then he texts me in the evening to ask how my evening is. I text back then he texts back, but something impersonal and then later again saying he can't play his computer game as internet is not working due to snow.

Not sure what to say to that so say nothing. Normally he says goodnight, last night not. This morning I get a text say that I have gone very quiet and he is very confused. So I wrote back immediately, and ask him how his morning is and I hear nothing.
