When a guy says you are the closest thing I have to a girlfriend?

What do you think that means. You either are or ya not, right?. When I asked him he politely changed the subject.

I think he is just being polite. Since you mention he changes the subject when asked, it is his way of saying he relates to you on that level but for some reason he can't bring himself to that. He may have certain tastes for looks or something else that he doesn't see in you.

I kinda relate to this because I had this kind of relationship with a classmate many years ago. She was fun and easy to talk to but was not my type, physically. So we never became an item.

I'm glad you have confronted him on this, though. That's the best way.

"you are the closest thing I have to a gf" it is exactly what it says, you are the woman in his life that he has the best relationship with, he's hinting that he likes you by proposing the situation that you two were in a relationship.

Honestly, some questions.

Couldn't it be that he meant this as a compliment, and a hint ? He may have expected a different response than he received, so when he politely changed the subject it was because he felt awkward after the response. It's obvious he felt comfortable enough to put the girlfriend thing in his statement, maybe he'd like this woman to fill that role.

I don't think so because the QA asked him what he meant, she didn't refuse him. I mean, clearly they have been dating a while. And if you've been dating then the natural progression of things would be a boyfriend/girlfriend relationship. And I think his response indicated the he wasn't quite ready for that step

I think he also gives me these little hints because he doesn't want me to date others and stay committed to him and continue to the caring things I do for him More to come but I just enjoy being with him and watching how things play out...
