If you are a guy walking along a sidewalk with your girlfriend/wife, is it considered courteous to walk on the curb side?

The men in my family would absolutely agree that this is something a man should do.
This came up when I was on a date with a guy sometime last summer who was an EMT. We discussed (jokingly-ish) who's life was more important: a teacher that educates our future or and EMT that can save our future. In the end, we decided it was better if I walk on the outside because he would be likely to save me whereas I have no medical skills to save him if such an injury should occur.
With my daughter, I am ALWAYS on the outside of her.
I gotta give you shit because you're a teacher with a misspell. That's a red check, it should read "a teacher that educates our future or AN emt..."
Again, it's just a joke I know you to be intelligent.
But in the end I would say a teacher is more important. An EMT can't learn their skill without being taught.
Haha I rightfully should be called out for that!!
Thanks for MHO
I don't really care but my husband automatically switch places as protection.
I've just grown up with being told to do this when I'm walking with my little sister as protection as she didn't run into the road as a child or get hit by a car but I've also been told its a gentlemanly thing to do, to put my safety over hers so I've always just had it in my head to do this with females when walking together
I mean to put her safety over mine
I do the same thing with children and my friends
For me it doesn’t matter if it is a girlfriend or coworker or female customer, I try my best to walk on the road side so they are more protected. Whenever I am walking either alone or with someone else, I am always more alert to vehicles coming and going around me.

Or... Crazy idea, but maybe you could walk behind or in front of her?
So you're not one of those annoying couples that are blocking the way because you're too focused on your relationship looking normal instead of actually acting like a pedestrian.
Its so the drunk driver hits him first.
Out of social conditioning I do this with out even thinking about it. A girl I was fooling around with in my freshman year of college told me that was a custom.
Personally I don’t care. It’s like opening a door or pulling out a chair I do it on reflex now. But realize what this means. I die first if there is an accident.
That's a new one from the list of idiotic behaviors society invented to make our lives miserable
Pleeeeease! 😒
Yeah. The fuck.
And I was just bored now. 🤣
I think it was in old timey ettiquite (I learned it in cotillion) so if water gets splashed it doesn't get on the lady but this ain't the 1920s nobody has to unless they wanna.
Yes, but it's not like I ever remember or notice unless the man makes a thing out of it. Likewise with car doors.
Yes, it's considered courteous to walk on the curb side. It somewhat protects her.
Yes it is. From what I understand it dates back to the Middle Ages when trash was thrown out of upstairs windows.
doesn't matter to me, i don't even care if i walk on the dirt either, and if she wants i'll even give a piggyback ride.
I think it has more to do about room and whats more comfortable. For me, walking on the curb is better than walking through dirt.
The man takes the curbside. Goes back to the days when chamberpots were emptied by throwing the contents out the window. Awnings protected people near the buildings, not so by the curb.
It doesn't matter. I can't believe people actually get upset when the guy doesn't do that.
Just lead the way and walk in front of her or walk behind her.
My boyfriend does that for me because he says that’s the side he should walk on
Lol I never thought that such thing existed lmao. It sounds weird and it should look weird to other people staring at a guy that walks on the curbside while his gf/wife walks normally.
Unfortunately yes, you have to walk on the road side because it's more dangerous and if a car loses control, as a man, you have to be hit first.

It doesn't really matter. I personally don't even notice that.
Yes it is cause I dont want anything to happen to her
It doesn't matter. That stuff seems outdated to me.
There is no reason they both can't walk on the same sidewalk.
For me I suppose it's up to the girl and her way of thinking but for the most part it doesn't matter
What, seriously that's a thing somewhere in the world.
That stupid.
No one I know cares, if there's room for both use it.
If there isn't the one who starts walking on the outside should stay there.
That's so stupid...
You can both cuddle and walk down the street. Or just have one walk ahead.
Why does one need to walk side by side?
Some old folks would even say that if she walks on the curb side you are selling her, but it is also courteous.
A gentleman always walks on the side of the sidewalk closest to traffic.
I don't think it matters.
Yes, a gentleman would walk curbside.
Only if he higher in height with her or he suicidal
that's too far from me
I don’t think people notice
That's only for kids not adults.
Yes it’s courteous

Does not matter
