Etiquette: Do you or your man walk on the outside of a curb side?

I've always been told at a young age that a man should always walk a lady on the outside of a curb side, it shows good manner and respect towards their woman. Guys, do you walk on the outside? Have you heard about this rule or not? Ladies, does your man follow this rule or you simply don't care?

I meant to say, a man should walk on the ouside of the curb side and their lady on the inside.

Yes, I have been taught that too.

I even do it with my own child.

It shows that you are protecting that person.

If tragedy were to happen (ex. a car losing control and spinning on to the curb), that you'd allow yourself to be in the way of that preventing the other person from facing has much damage.)

I've heard men say they do this before (but they always forget to switch sides).

My boyfriend is the only one that follows through with it (that I have met).

Sometimes we'll walk like 15 blocks and I am still shocked till this day that he always remembers to switch sides and I don't have to remind him (we've been together for 6 years).

Any guy who does this, real gentlemen.

Now that I think about it, I don't think I even notice which side I am on ^^ I tend to enjoy walking on the road (when it's too late for any traffic), so it's not really an issue anyway :)

I don't care either way, so it'd depend on whether he pays attention to how we walk.

If I had to chose, I'd take the outside of the curb though : it feels more comfortable, you never risk getting squeezed between the wall and the one you're walking with :) Besides I don't often see cars driving on the curbs anyway :P

My guy walks on the side of the curb. I actually never heard about the rule until then and I find it very sweet! I kept wondering when we switched streets and he switched sides until he told me why. lol

It originated from men walking on that side to shield the woman from cars passing by and splashing water up onto the sidewalk. It was more "gentlemanly" to take the hit so to speak than to risk having her get the water instead.

I don't follow by this because I don't think about it. I'm not hostile or anything towards it, but I don't think it is disrespectful to walk on one side or another of her. Just some antiquated notion.

I always do this when walking with a lady, it is the act of a gentleman and it is to keep her safe in the event of an accident. Such as a car spinning out of control or shielding the lady from water or dirt that way spray upwards when a car passes you and her by. You would be in the way of the object in question and it would hit you instead of her thus you taking a hit for her.

I've heard about it but I've never learned it as a kid. I kinda see the point in it, but at the same time I view it as being ridiculous. I can still protect her while being on the inside part of the curb. Plus, sometimes the girl moves closer to the curb and trying to get between her and the road would be very awkward.

I do this. Just seems more, I don't know, protective somehow. I think my parents did this with me, so that's probably where I learned to do it.

Naw. We're all equal now, guys don't need to give girls any special treatment they wouldn't give a guy friend.

That's part of equality, that you can't demand special treatment.

Let me ask you, or anyone who bemoans "the death of chivalry"--men and women are thoroughly equal in the USA. Why does any woman deserve special treatment for being a woman? Is that a special achievement, or a handicap, that women can think they deserve special treatment over men, especially in this day and age?

I understand what you are saying, but to me the kind of friendship I have with girls is different to the one I have with guys. Both are like family, but the guys are like my twin brothers. Girls are like my little sisters (of course excluding girlfriends, but I treat them equally. So I suppose I do this as part of my "protectivity". Even though its not a word. I care about them differently to guys, but also equally.

interesting...i prefer walking closer to the curb lol. I almost always end up being on the left side of the person I'm walking with. it feels weird to be on the right side for some reason.

I've heard of it. I think of it when I'm walking with someone on the sidewalk, but if we are in the wrong spots I don't tell them to switch with me.

I think he should walk on whatever side he wants to. So I guess I don't care.

Yes, I follow this rule more out of habit/instinct rather than consciously deciding to do so.

Yes I do it without out thinking about it. And if we switch sides, I automatically step in between. Don’t be surprised if someday someone pulls up and asks you how much? 😂 It’s not always about puddles lol
