What do you think of Chinese people?

People who have never, in any capacity, had any associations with Chinese people - never been to China, never befriended a Chinese person, never actually experienced Chinese culture - should just refrain from commenting on this post. It's always amusing to see how many people are so quick to show off their ignorance, almost as if being ignorant was something to be proud of.

The Chinese have a proverb for this sort of mentality: 一无所知 (yī wú suǒ zhī)
Translation: Knowing absolutely nothing about something.

Better to hide one's ignorance than proclaim it for all the world to see!

Having said that, from my experience living in China and Hong Kong, I would say that the Chinese are:

1. Money-Oriented. Even the Japanese routinely acknowledge that their Chinese counterparts can see all the financial aspects of every big project - and coming from the Japanese, that's high praise! The saving rate in China is about 50%. Many people in China who live in smaller towns and cities are able to buy their houses and apartments outright, without taking loans.

2. Hard-Working. Chinese working culture is 996. Start work at 9 am. Work until 9 pm. Do this 6 days a week. Of course, not every company and not every employee follows this culture. And of course, there's a point where productivity starts to drop. But for sheer effort alone, for sheer grit and the ability to get something done, I think the Chinese are way up there on the list.

3. Educated and Dislike Ignorance. Like all East Asian cultures, one's education is considered paramount to one's success in life. People with good education speak intelligently - only the uneducated are happy to show off their ignorance to the world. Talking about things you have no knowledge about - and worse, trying to PRETEND that you know something when you know nothing - is the height of arrogance and speaks of poor education.

4. Quick to Adapt. I feel that the Chinese are very quick to adapt to any environment they are thrown in. You send them packing to a country on the other side of the world, with nothing but the shirts on their back, they'll eventually amass a small fortune, which they will then pass on to their children. It's no accident that most of the major cities in the world have a "Chinatown".

5. Grit in the face of Adversity. The Chinese have a phrase: 吃苦. The literal translation is "Eat Bitterness". This concept is fundamental to Chinese nature. People who know to "eat bitterness", who know how to endure hardship, who can pick themselves up every time they fail - these are the people who are lauded. Unlike American exceptionalism, which celebrates talent and innate skills, the Chinese tend to put more focus on sheer grit - the ability to study hard, to work hard, to put one's nose to the grindstone, no matter how many obstacles stand in your way, no matter how many times other people put you down... This grit exemplifies the Chinese spirit.

A lot to ask in a small question. I see good and bad, plus and minus.

Most I've met I like as people, a lot of positives in family unity, respect, discipline, work ethic.

But it's not like I sit around thinking about Chinese people:) I saw 0 chinese people growing up until college...1 korean.

Contrary to what some GAGers think here, Chinese people and Asians in general are hard workers.

Proof is that in many countries in the world, they made themselves a reputation of succeeding where others have failed. If you look at Australia for example, a number of very successful SMEs are in Chinese hands.

China on the other hand is performing a soft invasion of many countries in the world. A large number of African countries would have a hard time to survive if it would not be for China and its investment. Look at Europe how much China has invested everywhere.

Whenever a company is financially on the brink, Chinese investors are saving the companies and the jobs, of course by placing some of their citizens at the helm.

In 20 years from now, China will have surpassed all Western economies and then, the hard invasion will happen and not even America will be able to resist it.

I predict that within 50 years, China and its citizens will have a dominating grip on all economies.

Chinkers are cheap but they got Beijing Beef down sweet.

The Koreans do good laundry the Vietnamese and Cambodians do nails marvelously, Mexicans work for nothing and the Puerto Ricans steal.
I'd go into Italians Pollock's and the snaggle toothed English but it's mostly white people here and I dont want everyone upset.

At home they are as nice as I am. As tourists, they are noisy and stingy. As girls they are usually very attractive. As boys they are usually posers. As industrial producers they are objectionable. As merchants they are sly. As a number, they are way too many. As a culture they are over-rated - but interesting. As movie producers they are terrible. As music producers they are even more terrible.
I met quite a number of Chinese. I like them, basically.

I think they're extremely smart and competitive. The girls are hot. Also they are pretty blunt and straight forward with people ( real / can be rude ) but fun people.
