Anyone who says there's a difference based on the animal is not thinking quite clearly.

There IS a difference depending on how you kill the animal. If you take out a deer quickly and cleanly in one shot in order to eat it, that's much more acceptable than brutally stabbing the deer to death for fun.

But in the end, killing something is killing something. Most hunters nowadays take pride in taking something's life to the point of disgracing its body by posing with it. They wear hunting-themed clothing (camouflage, bright orange, etc.) in public to make a statement about their hobby.

That's sickening. One shouldn't take pride in violence. Hunting should be done for food and not for sport.

The hamster is under your personal care. You are responsible for it to thrive and survive. Killing it shows that your mentality doesn't quite comprehend the emotions attached to such a mission.

This is a common trait in serial killers.

When you hunt or fish, you are killing an animal that you have no ties to.

It's a bit similar to how a soldier can kill an enemy in war, but no one in their right mind would kill their own family.

Of course, killing a human, even if it's in a war, can cause trauma for some, but this is because of the ties we have as a fellow humans, though it's much weaker than normal, and is often overlooked due to it being a war.

I do not like hunting. However, I understand it if needed to survive, not as a sport. To me, sport hunting is no different than the killing of pets because the "sport" part means you enjoy the killing. Hunting for survival is different. The difference is the heart behind the kill. Do you enjoy killing animals for the sake of pride or do you dread it but do it to live?

Because of the role of the animal in the person's life. If you raised hamsters to kill for food then killing them would be normal. If you have a kind of pact with the hamster that "this is my pet" and you just randomly kill it for kicks they you might be a serial killer.

Hunting is for food, just like growing a garden is for food. Killing a hamster is not. Most hunters I've known also garden. Hunting and gardening can cut your grocery bill dramatically.

I don't think modern day hunters actually understand the hunting tradition of the native tribes whose survival actually depends on hunting wild animals. In fact modern day hunters probably have great grandfathers who are the colonists who go after the original hunters with their CZ-550 .375 H&H Magnum, which is the same gun they use to kill wild life today. Maybe that's the tradition! Maybe when you grow more intelligent and articulate you will see there is a similarity after all, they are both about going after the weaker species because we can not because we need to, hunting simply has a longer tradition so it's masked with other cultural aspects, but who knows, maybe few centuries later killing hamster will also become tradition!
