If You Found A Bag Full Of Cash, Would You Keep It Or Turn It In?

I have once found £200 on the street in front of the post office. Upon picking the banknotes up, I looked around and asked those people immediately in my vicinity if they lost the money. All said to keep it but I just imagined this little old lady or old man that lost all his/her savings.
I went to the police station and the officer seemed to be annoyed that he needed to waste time on filling forms. I could clearly see that he thought I was demented but I could not shake the thought that somewhere, an elderly person is missing that money.
One year later, I received a note from the lost property office that no one claimed the money and that I could get the funds back, minus 6% for storing it in their safe for that long.
I did the mistake of returning cash once before and got laughed at. I will not make this mistake a second time.
By someone telling somebody they think they lost 200 at or around a specific place and you find out about it and give it back. Of course of it only 200 and not 200,000 then I think its ok to keep it. Finding money in a store or restaurant is a no brainer, but outside is something totally different
I guess it depends a lot on where I found it. for example, I live about a a 2 hour drive from the poorest place in Canada, and a lot of robberies, kidnaps, assaults happen there. If I found a bag of cash just sitting in a alleyway in that part of town, I'd take it because the money was no doubt stolen from other people, so I'd just steal the money from the person who stole the money from other people. But if I found a bag of money at my school, or in a public area with lots of people, I wouldn't take the money.
I'd hold on to it, pay attention to the news for a while to see if anyone was coming forward looking for it, and if someone claimed it I'd give it back (after making sure it was theirs).
I would not, however, turn it in to the police. They have a policy called civil forfeiture that allows them to confiscate and use money and other valuable property suspected of involvement in a crime.
Typically, if no one comes forward to claim the money, they won't work very hard to find out who it belongs to and return it. They'll seize it under civil forfeiture laws and spend it on stuff they want around the station. Often on things like a new coffee machine or other amenities.
If no one came forward after a few months, I'd donate the money to cancer research.
I would really want to keep it, but my conscience wouldn't let me. Because if that were my bag of money, I'd want it back. Plus you never know where that money is from/what it's for.
Yeah, There'd be a struggle for me between temptation and doing the "right" thing.
I think the "right thing" to do is leave it alone and call the anonymous tip line, electronically disguise your voice, and give them the location. Then watch your back too! Even if you turned it in and no one claimed it in the allotted time and it became yours, you're still not safe !!
@loveslongnails - That is a good idea depending on where you find it. I'd imagine I'd do something like that if it were in the middle of nowhere or there weren't people around and it was in an unorthodox place. Because you never know what could happen in this crazy world! 😂

You are legally required to turn it in to police. After a period of time, if the owner is not found, you get to keep it. https://www.hg.org/legal-articles/found-money-what-are-my-legal-obligations-31615
Not everyone always does the legal thing tho 🤷🏼♀️
I would turn it in. My upbringing obligates me to do so. The way I was raised in this regard is that if it is not yours to begin with, then taking it would be stealing. Not to mention, when it is turned over to authorities, if no one claims it within a certain amount of time, then it is awarded to whomever turned it in. And honestly, in that case, I would take it and donate it to a local charity.
Very Noble of you
Oh I know, it'd be the 😇 on one shoulder, the 😈 on the other kind of moment
Exactly. And the way I feel about it, I owe more to my parents and grandparents than what I could potentially gain by keeping the money, as without my parents and grandparents and the values they taught me, I would not be the man I am today. Plus, money like that, which started as being found, would go a long way, and to a better cause, if it were donated to something that helps others. My personal choice of charity would be either a children's hospital, filled with children who have the potential to do great things for this world, or to a battered women's shelter, which would go a long way to helping those women rebuild their lives and go on to doing great things.
Very awesome response!!!
Too often, people forget that the choices we make each day effect more than ourselves. A positive choice that changes the life of another for the better can cause a ripple effect that goes on to more or even better things for even more people. That child who was saved by the money being donated may just become the doctor who ends up finding a cure for childhood cancer. That woman who's life was changed by a sum of money may become a multimillionaire who creates her own business or charity that goes on to help even more people out of situations similar to the one that she had been in. When making choices in this life, one must think not only about the short term effects for themselves, but also the long-term effects on others.
I would return it as I believe in the law of attraction, what you do is a reflection of what you are going to manifest into your life. I also would assume it’s illegally made money, and I wouldn’t want run ins with criminals so i’d definitely either ignore it or turn it in.
If I choose to keep it amd the owner ends up asking for it I'll give it back. If i pick it up and there is no sign of owner (literally if i walk a few blocks and no one says shit ) I'll just keep it. Fuck it life ain't fair and nothing happens for no reason
Nobody in their right mind would leave such a large amount of money accidentally hanging around. I'd suspect it was planted deliberately or abandoned intentionally. It's not mine to take and I'm not needy. I'll call it in to the proper authority or turn it in and I'd make sure I have witnesses to testify that I didn't have any bad intentions.
Like anything I found, I would retain possession of it, but I'd report it in general terms and if I could identify an owner, I would return it. If there was no way to identify it, and after 90 days it wasn't claimed (they'd need to be specific about it to claim it), then it would become mine.
Well I would hope there's an address or a form of ID inside. Otherwise, I'd assume that it's drug money, in which case, I'd personally distribute it charitably to people who need it, since the police would most likely just keep it for themselves. I'll probably keep a stack or two for some clothes and a nice dinner. And a trip to a nice place.
All good ideas
Lol 😊 sure
Open the bag and check if there is any name or contact info or any card, if yes... I will call them and ask them to come to me and then I will ask some question regarding bag to varify if the bag really belongs to him, if varified successfully I will return the bag... if not I can't say what will I do that moment...
And if there is no ids or any contact info about anyone in that bag... I will wait many hours there, where I found the bag, in Hope of someone come and claim the bag... if no one come, I will assume that the bag is a gift for me from God and thus I will keep it myself
In any situation, I will not give that bag to police at any cost... EITHER, I will find and return the bag to whom it belongs, OR, I will keep it.
for me
I would turn it in. It could be stolen property or counterfeit bills. Keeping it could have serious legal ramifications. Besides, if you turn it in to the police and no one else claims it, they often allow the finder to claim it, assuming the money is legit.
If it was just a bag of money would hold on to it for awhile and not spend it and to see if anyone reported missing money , but I would keep hush about it , after a few weeks my ass is spending it , if it was someone’s wallet or purse with a ID in it I would return it
I would look to see if there was any contact information in it and if not then I would go online and tell others about the money I found and about the location I found it and see who got into contact with me about it ! if someone can tell me what I need to know and it is pretty accurate then I will let them have the money ! Thanks
That would be tough. The fear of karmic consequences usually causes me to turn lost things in; I found a wedding ring at my work. For a minute, I thought of pawning it to pay off debts. But, an old woman came looking for it, so I’m glad I turned it in. But, if I found a bag of money? With my student loans hovering over me, I’d probably keep it to pay them off regardless of the karmic consequences.
I want to say that of course I would turn it in. I would like to think myself so Noble but in all honesty I think I keep that son of a bitch and be very careful how I spend it says not to draw attention to myself.
I hear you. Years ago, I'd have said turn it in. Now, I think I'd keep it
Once the police across the street were looking for a bag of money. I wondered why that stranger a few hours earlier was running down the road and jumped in the bushes, lol.
-If its a bag of money, YOU BET SOMEONE is most certainly looking for it. The police would have most certainly already be looking for it.
Turn it in... you don't think someone will come looking for that $$$$. Anyone see the movie "No Country for Old Men?" If you were thinking about keeping the money make sure you see that movie first.
Get rid of the fucking transponder and you are home free!
@KrakenAttackin
Yeah you don't want to roll naked on a transponder 😂😂
Hell Yes! That damn thing might get caught in my arse!!!
@KrakenAttackin
😂😂😂
Depends on how much is in it and hos desperate I am. If the person it originally owned by needs it more than me, return it. If it's a rich butt I'd keep it.
Good plan lol
Depending if it's a handbag sure find the owner with some type of ID in it. But say fine a baag full of money like that one girl who found 300,000 and she returned it to the bank and they gave her 500 bucks... that broke my heart. On God I'm keepin a bag, I got people to feed thought it was 😭🤣
The problem with "finding a bag of cash" is... who lost it or stashed it? They're not usually the kind of people who want you around after finding it. I'd be worried about taking it from wherever I found it TO the cop shop even !!
Yeah cuz getting whacked by the mafia ain't worth it 😊
Exactly, or by a drug cartel, or anyone.
It would depend how much. And what i thought the likilihood of reuniting it wirh it's owner. I've found several benjamins sitting on a snowbank. Sure i could have turned it into rhe cops. But it would have just ended up in a cops wallet.
If we're talking about a bag FULL of money, oh yeah someone going to miss that money. No way i'd keep it.
Bag of cash? What bag full of money are you talking about? I haven't seen any bag of money around here.
Lol 😂😂
I would make a public notice... maybe here on GaG... and require the individual to list out all the serial numbers on each bill... I mean how else would I know for sure it's the rightful owner lol :)
Lol really? Quick without looking list the serial #'s of all the bills in your wallet?
I would keep it and here is why. If it were a wallet or small sum I would turn it in because I'm not a piece of shit. If it were a bag as you said then I'd keep it because that much is most likely from some drug or weapons dealer or its from some other criminal activity so fuck em it's their loss. No one just carries around a bag of cash.
As much as I would love to just keep it cause god knows I need the money, it's not mine. And it could be linked to a drug deal or something shady/illegal, cause let's face it why else would there be a bag full of $100s? So yeah, turn it in. I might get some funny looks and one guy might call me stupid, but I'll do what I have to and I'll do it for the right reason. ... But man would I want to keep it...
That's a tough one, it would all depend on where I found it and how much was in the bag... There are so many dishonest people out there I would not know turning it in would get it back to its rightful owner... I think If I couldn't find its rightful owner I would donate it so that more unfortunate people can benefit from it. Keeping it will only bring bad karma...😔
I would keep it. if it was like a bank bag then fuck no. i dont need a dye bomb going off in my face. if it was several million dollars i would most definitely keep it after i checked if had any tracking devices and shaking up to see if a dye bomb goes off in the bag, if everything is good im taking it
No country for old men.
Where could that bag come from, and in what manner was it filled up?
I'd keep it first and see if there's someone who's missing or claiming it.
If that someone is a bank or similar - I'll keep it.
Really? Even after seeing the movie. I would think you'd be smarter than that "friendo".
@meesegoMoo Actually, BECAUSE of seeing the movie. I don't 'need' that money immediately; similar to a lottery win, I can keep quiet about it. We think of a hypothetical case here: unlike the character in the movie, it would make sense to stash the bag somewhere unrelated to me and see what happens.
As I mentioned initially: it still would be possible that someone claims it later on;
as a [awkward] constructed 'case': a confused old lady who wanted to pay the cancer treatment of her son, and she forgot the bag somewhere. No question - she'll get it back from me.
I getcha. Nice choice in film.
@meesegoMoo Now let's get us a gas bottle :D... Just in case
Turn it in. I’m not getting caught with stolen money nor caught with like some drug money.
Yeah cuz that's probably what it would be
How much are we talking? If it's a bag of coins I'm keeping it, if its a bag of cash money I'm keeping it, if it's a bag of kittens I'm keeping it.
😂😂 lol
KEEP. NOT EVEN READING THE OTHER ANSWERS THEY'RE LYING
Lol 😂
I suspect I may have to count it and go ahead and take my 10 grand reward money up front. Just in case they forget about me later.
Lol good answer
I'd keep it. I certainly wouldn't turn it in to the police. If I heard about the person who lost it, I would return it unless they were a drug dealer. Normal people don't often carry around bags of cash.
If there is an ID, I would return it. If there is hope of finding the owner, I would start searching. If it is hopeless practically speaking, I would wait for an unspecified long period of time for someone to come looking for it at the same spot. If no one comes after several days, I will take ownership of it and give 1/3 in charity first to thank God, and then keel the rest for my use as Allah wills.
I hope that answers your question in detail, babe.
This happened to me before. I found a wad of cash in the ATM machine but I turned it in.
That was honest of you
😊😊
If i say i won't keep it people will respect me , if i say i would keep it people will shame me. Lets say then i won't keep it*wink wink*
😊😇 😉lol
Turn it in. Then if it’s not claimed yiu get it legally. Also, the person who lost it spent a ton of time accumulating that cash. Even if theyre dumbasses for losing it.
That's the honest thing to do
If it looked like in the picture I wouldn't keep it because that looks like it would get me into big trouble.
Maybe I'd keep a few stacks though. :D
A bag full of Cash,
There is no way that didn't come from some shady shit so Morality isn't an issue here for me
Lol right?
Really the issue I'd have is, will they murder me to attempt to get it back
And even if they don't know it's you that found, how would you know that? So yeah, paranoia could set in. You think everyone's following you. Scared to spend it. Lol reminds me of a book read where the guy finds 3 million stashed in boxes when his dad died.
I would turn it in. Whether or not I got a reward. It's just the right thing to do.
Very respectable
Do unto others as you wish to be done on to.
keep it because nobody is gonna go to the authorities for that money back it's like im giving the staff at the police station money for them to split up
Keep it because if you turn it in you will never see that money again. And a chance of a reward is slim to none.
Definitely turn it in. That much money all at once in an unmarked bag? That sounds like the key to Pandora's box; not least of which, I would be concerned about the owner looking for it too.
Keep it, i would feel like I just got blessed.
I would just keep it somewhere forever never touching it only when I need it most.
I'd check to see if the serial numbers are sequential or not (if it can be traced), then if not I'd keep it. I'd wait a while before spending it though to see if it comes up on the news, but if I was totally sure nobody would know I'd keep it.
What that thing my kids used to say, finders keepers 😂
😂😂
I would turn it in because my family would odviously find out if i started buying heaps of stuff and could easily get into big trouble if i kept it.
That's probably true. Still it'd be tempting
I would like to say that I'd turn it in, but in reality I don't know. If it was a large duffel bag, some might fall out, accidentally of course.
Right? Lol
In my youth I would have turned it in, now? Fuck... I would spread that cash on my be and roll naked in it.
😂😂 That one got me lol 😂
Turn it into the police because it doesn't belong to me.
I actually found $5509 in cash not one person knew except my girlfriend whom was with me at the time and i knew whos money it was and gave them the money and would again got a thank you
Damn, they could have at least bought you dinner or something. Some people wouldn't have been so honest. That was very decent of you.
Well if i knew who it belonged to i would definitely return
It has happened many times that my clients forgot their wallets but i always always returned them as they were left
Definitely turn it in. There is such a greater reward for doing such a deed rather than being slinky.
I’d be tempted but i’d turn it in. I’d fear its some kinda stolen bank money and would probably come after me the moment i spent a bill from it
No matter what situation you have to assess it and then act. As long as you do within yourself the proper action all things should turn out well.
I just finished reading a book about this exact situation. I feel like life would be a lot less stressful in the long run without touching it.
Most likely keep it. Check the newspapers for reports, but if nothing comes from it I'd keep it. Donate some, help my parents because they can use some right now :/ it'd be worth the jail time
Be 100% honest, grab a handful for myself and take it too the cops, tell the cops exactly what I did.
Neither - I would go to a police station and report the find and then hide before the drug dealers come looking for me
i'd Call police and wouldn't touch it. There are many tricks criminals use to get you involved in something.
I would possess this bag. Remain there for a ***reasonable amount of time. Drive home and count.
Count and keep? Lol
There are many variables that would determine what I would do with it.
I think that's where Is be at as well
😂 yeah that's true lol
That's decent
