If you found a wallet with $5,000 cash and no ID, and you knew there was no way you'd get caught, what would you do with it?

Depends. If there’s some way of identifying the owner then turn it in. Otherwise, tbh, I’d split the money between a few reliable charities so it goes towards someone in need.
I would track down the owner and have him prove his identity and give it to him with all of the money 💰 still inside.
A truly decent woman. That's what you are 😊
And how are you going to track down the owner if it had no ID in it?
@NoDecision
Maybe the police would be in a good mood that day when I will go in there and ask if they can finger print 🐾 the wallet and run it through the procedure and see if anything turns up. DNA left on the wallet and I could use some of the money to run the DNA from the wallet and then 🤞🏼
The fingerprint check is actually a good idea. 👍🏼
I wonder if they can really get a fingerprint off a leather wallet? 🤔

I found a wallet with a good amount of money in it once and it didn't have any sort of ID or address. I looked around to see whether someone comes looking for it. Didn't see anyone. I tried to check if there was any way I could find out who this belongs to. There was no way.
So, I put it back where I found it and hoped whoever it belongs to will find it as I don't trust most of the police in my city and I doubt the owner will go to the police despite knowing that the wallet didn't have his ID.
Probably belonged to some drug dealer.
Get caught for what? What law are you breaking? No ID means finders keepers. If you turn it in who do you turn it in to? The police? They will hold on to it for 30 days and if no one claims it, then it will be put in the department piggybank for some future use, such as a New Year's Party. If I dropped a wallet with ID or not, I would consider it gone. You never know when a person that found it will start feeling guilty enough to turn it in, if ever. However, if someone looked me up by my driver's license and returned it, I would be very happy and give them a $500 reward. You can always watch the lost and found ads in the newspaper to see if anyone found their wallet. Only he and me would know how much was in it.
@NoDecision nice to see critical thought
Easiest mora dilemma ever. I'm keeping it. With no moral conflict about it. That is the only thing to do. What else am I going to do? Give it to my local police (where it will definitely go into evidence, while the police earnestly seek out the rightful owner.)
Keep it. Or donate it to your local police so they can keep it (and laugh at how silly it was, that you thought anything else was going to happen... when you came in with $5000 of anonymous found cash)
If I lost my wallet with no ID and $5000... That money is gone. Obviously. And that sucks. But it is what it is.
That's a trap. You're going on a Youtube social experiment!
But assuming it wasn't that, if there’s no ID, no witnesses if it's a sparse area, no visible cameras around and no way to return it directly, maybe it's just luck. I'd take it. I would donate at least some of it to charity though.
I would hold onto it and post it on the community website asking if anyone lost a wallet recently, if so inbox me the description of the wallet and what’s inside , if no one claims it within a month , money is mine
I'd keep it, and I wouldn't feel bad about it.
I wouldn't have any way to find the owner, anyway, so what are my other options? Leave it there? Besides, who the hell walks around with five grand?
Report it to the police and say there was some money in it. I would not tell the police the amount. Check to see if anyone contacted the police about the wallet.
After 30 days if no one contacted police, I would use the money.
Take it straight to the authorities. I don't want any sleepless nights thank you.
bring it to the police. cause if they find the owner, according to german law, i still get 3% which is 150 bucks of legal money. and if the owner doesn't turn up, i get all of it completely legal.
Give it to the police, I'm a Catholic so I would fear I get bad luck and get punished if I did not give it to the police and kept it.
Do you think the police are honest?
Nothing. It may be a set up and, next thing you know, you’re being arrested. This has happened to people.
What I always do I don't get a wallet but sometimes i do find money on streets I choose to donate it..
The person who lost it will get good karma as it's hard earned money.
Why would you even post such a question. But let me just answer it.
I would take it home and be super happy that I found 5,000 dollars.
The wallet itself I would probably throw it away.
Keep it. There would be no way I could return it to the rightful owner without ID, and I certainly would not talk to police about it for fear of their suspicion I had done something wrong or their abuse.
Take half and turn in the rest at some police station.
Where... here in Thailand it's perhaps wiser to only hand over the wallet itself.
I mean what the heck, it’s really a no brainier. No I. D.
You either keep it or give it to a charity you support. Just a couple of ideas
If there was no ID or way to find the rightful owner, I would consider it to be my lucky day.
I'd turn it in to the police and let them sort it out.
it would be in my bank account and the wallet would be in a dumpster.
I'd turn it into the police. If it remains unclaimed, it becomes mine.
Advertise locally - describe in detail the wallet and contents. No response? I'd donate it to several pet rescues I know about.
I would still turn it in at the police station because if I took it I would feel really guilty and shameful.
Try to find owner. If not possible, use it as a fund to help others (e. g. buy supplies for a soup kitchen, foster kids organization etc)
I would find the guy from the NID details and I will hand over the money and nid to the guy
I would keep it and do some charity with that money.
What could you get caught doing? YOU found it! YOU get to spend it!!
It depends where I found it. There is interesting law on lost property, missplaced vs abandoned... It can be pretty context specific.
I have and would turn in found items.
Be happy with the money of course, 5k is not much these days anyway
Maybe to you but $5k could change a lot of people's lives
You gotta make a more detailed setting, in what city you find them since if it is in center of New York I am pretty sure its not much if its in 3rd world country its something
$5k is 2 months rent for a lot of people in Canada. That is pretty damn helpful.
Turn it over to the police and hope nobody claims it.
If it’s not possible to return it, there’s nothing with finding and keeping it
Honestly probably turn it in.
Depends if I trust the local police
I'm using it to turn a profit
I’m not sure
@HawkPerception
That’s a lot of money to lose, I think the person probably reported it to the police and then maybe it would be returned back to the person that lost it
Just take cash not the wallet.
I can't use. I could use with charity work
Mine
Take money
