Why do some people jiggle doorknobs if no one answers the door?

I've had this happen a few times, where if someone knocked on my door a few times and I didn't answer, they would then jiggle the doorknob and try to turn it. (Luckily it was locked each time.) But what do you think people's purpose is in doing this?

I hate when people do that it's best we keep our doors locked
and my cousin has a bad habit of not locking the doors and
someday some person will come in and hold a gun on her
all-cause of her stupidity

Yeah, I'm pretty sure you're right. This seems aggressive and controlling, for someone to try to force themself in, knowing they aren't wanted. It's always those type of people who I've seen doing this. So crazy is actually a pretty good description.

It actually happened to me today, which is what made me ask the question. I just didn't answer the door or respond to it, even after the knob was jiggled. Eventually the person went away.

Because they figure you can't hear the door ring/knocking. So if the door is open, they can let themselves in and see if you're home.

At least that's my theory.

No, I've never done that, but my dad has... several times :|
Apparently some people don't realize that if you don't answer, that means you're either not home, or you don't want to be disturbed!!!

Well it depends. If they know you're inside and not answering maybe they're hoping the door is unlocked so they can open and say what they came to say. Or maybe they think for a moment something's happened to you and you're on the ground that's why you're not answering so they try to open the door.

But it's an uncommon thing to do as far a I know. Like it would be serously awkward if the door actually does open

it is a subconscious thing dealing with being a Good Samaritan. The logic behind it is if no one is home, the door would be locked. If the door is unlocked, someone is home and a good chance may need help because they could not answer the door.

Because it is COMPLETELY RUDE not to answer the door if someone is home.

What if the person at the door is someone you've been being harassed by? Is that still rude?

Actually, If it was a guy that has been harassing you, Call 9-1-1, then yell to the guy at the door "Just a minute" , tell the operator there is a harasser at your door, then keep the door shut and locked, but talk with the guy until the police come.

I don't do it. I knock and the listen. If I hear movement or etc. Then obviously someone's in that room, particularly the bathroom. Also maybe that person doesn't know if there is just one stall or toilet. Some people just don't hear well.

That's strange... The only explanation for me is opening the door to ask if anyone is home but that's a pretty bold move

They want to get inside. Either to rob, kill, hurt or rape. Literally nothing good comes of it.
