Wouldn't it still be animal cruelty if someone shoots pitbulls to death for thrills?

In the person's story, the dog wasn't in attacking mode, was at a distance and not even facing him. Then he claimed that he would continue shooting more ''of those ugly mutts'' (the words he referred to them) and that it was ''fun''. I think that's still animal cruelty, esp if the animal wasn't even looking at you nor attacking.
