I like to debate but I hate arguing. I see debate as a calm, respectful confrontation of different opinions, usually backed up by facts, opinions with solid ground while I see arguing as an emotional fight with arguments that usually mostly have an emotional basis.

I like debates because they allow me to question my own opinions and some aspects of the world, to learn more in general, but I hate arguments as I just see them as people taking out their feelings on others while hiding behind "arguments" that, in reality, are not about the "objective forefront" but more about the "emotional background".

Besides, arguing does not help as, instead of diving at the heart of the feelings to solve the pain, people take out their pain onto others and I disagree with that.

Exactly, it's not a discussion anymore since at least on party do not listen. To be fair, there is nothing to listen to in the text itself as it's not really about the words, about what is being said and more about the feelings behind the words. It's more about trying to figure out the feelings behind the words and trying to discuss about that if you want to go through the hassle of trying to help the other sort their feelings out, which I would not recommend as it's exhausting and usually very ungrateful.

Actually winning is nice but not if I need to break any of the plethora of imagined rules I have for how to debate things. So argue yes, winning meh.

I kinda am. I like to understand the other person’s point though, it’s not cause I wanna win or anything. I’ve admitted I was wrong many times after I was convinced the other person had better arguments. I get excited when debating and I might take it to a whole different place just cause I thought since they see something a certain way they must also see something else similarly. I use it as something that helps me understand the other person and how they operate. A person’s point of view on things says a lot about their personality, morals etc.

Actually, I guess I’m weird! While I do LOVE to debate online, not SO much here, but certainly on other websites. In my personal life, I HATE to argue! I would much rather find common ground and a way for us to BOTH “win” I find MY healthy balance is keeping my online persona and my in person persona separate!

Perhaps I am. Though I must say, I only argue when I know I am correct and if the person I am arguing with refuses to accept a fact, I stop arguing and let them feel that they have won.

I have frequently been told, a person who continues to argue with a fool, will look like a fool infront of other people so one should never argue with a fool who loves winning arguements.

Argument should be about arriving at an agreed compromise based on facts not showing off.

Hey, there's a great word. Eristic. In my family, our word for eristic is "asshole." I like to argue with some people, people who I think are wrong most of the time. In general, though, no, I'm pretty laid back and prefer to spend my energy elsewhere.

I don't... It makes me anxious and unhappy. I will defend my point when I'm cornered, but I don't like arguing. I'd prefer to agree with others, but the sad thing is... we'll all have differences, and people will argue to make their point the best point.

Agreed! I think there could be a (small) difference between arguing, and "explaining my point"... Which, in Technical terms it's the same thing, but it could be a much more friendly (and much less audacious) encounter, making it a bit more tolerable, perhaps?
