You are driving near a very isolated alleyway where you catch a young woman being pinned to the ground, receiving punches over and over again by a man about the same size as you, probably older than you are. In reality what would you really do? Remember every second counts.

this is why I keep a baseball bat in my vehicle. This kind of coward usually doesn't expect a 61 year old man to hit a home run. So I have the element of surprise on my side. Fortunately I've not had to deal with that specific situation but a neighbor was beating on his girlfriend and she came out of her apartment all bloody and crying. I quickly pulled her into my place and locked the door and shut off all the lights and told her to be quiet since I didn't now if this guy was armed. I called 911 and the cops dealt with him. She went to the hospital but he got out of jail before she got out of the hospital and she didn't know he'd gotten out so I let her hide out in my place for a few hours until we knew he was gone to the bar to get drunk which was his nightly routine. Then I went next door and helped her pack up her stuff and drove her to a friend of mine who took her to a battered women's shelter. As a male I'm not allowed to know where that shelter is which is why I took her to a friend. The boyfriend got home later that night and there were a lot of screaming and window smashing but I had to call the cops again when he started to kick my vehicle and the alarm went off. He ended up going back to jail this time for a few weeks and meanwhile his landlord put all his stuff in the dumpster and changed the locks and fixed the place up and rented it out again and when he got out of jail he went after the new Tennent. Eventually he ended up going to prison. I'm sure his girlfriend would be dead if she hadn't gotten away from him.

Very realistic and sensitive question, so I'll answer the best I can.

Given the analysis of the situation, I'm looking to see if he has a weapon, his body mass index, fighting ability, and the distance of where the event is taken place.

My options:

1) park the car, and run towards him. He may run, or he may stay and fight. If he runs, I can check on the woman. If he stays and fight, I can subdue him quickly in choke holds (black him out), to get him on the ground, and call 911.

2) He has a weapon, so I walk towards him, hands open, to negotiate with him to calm down and put down the weapon. I may be shot in process.

3) Call 911, the offender may have fled the since by the time I get through, if not, I can still scare him off to protect the woman.

4) Grab the first object I see, and go Batman on him, tie him, leave him there unconscious, and call 911

*Disclaimer, there is a possibility that the woman maybe too afraid to press charges against him, so he goes free, and hunts me down, and the woman.

5) Call the police, and stay in the shadows until they arrive. They see him, and it's all solved from there.

In real life I was in a grocery store parking lot where this woman, two cars down from me, had locked herself in the car and what I can assume was her boyfriend was outside of her window with a crow bar threatening to bash the windows in. This was in broad daylight---this guy was clearly unhinged. I ran inside to the grocery store and got the manager who called 9-1-1 (I didn't have my cell phone at the time). I will always try to help if I can in these situations, but I'm not putting my life at risk by physically trying to confront someone like that. It's a get help/call 9-1-1 thing. They cannot be reasoned with and they may try to hurt you for trying to get in the way.

I would be a shitty person if i didn't help her. Obviously I'd try to help her in any way possible. The violent fights I've had with my brother would help me for sure. I always have pepper spray with me (ask my dad why lol) so i'd first use the pepper spray on him, punch him in the face, and then kick him in the balls, and oh I'd call 911 before i do all this. First I'm yelling so they guy knows he has been seen. This may be enough to get him to stop. I'd like to call 911, but there may not be time for that, this needs to stop now. If there is anyone else around I will point directly at them and yell "You, call 911!". Then I'm going to act. How I act all depends on the situation and what is available to use, but typically I think I would be withing my legal rights to defend a woman I don't know from an attack from a man I don't know (significant disparity of force) with up to and including lethal force.

hmmm🤔logically speaking I would get my phone out call authorities and maybe grab something as a weapon and start running towards him while yelling I have cops on the line etc basically my objective would be to secure he victim and scare the assailant away since in a fight there is a chance of getting hurt or killed since I do not know if he has a knife or a gun... buut that is what I would like to say I would do you never know if you freeze in those situations but at least I would call the cops and yell at the assailant

Get the police on the phone immediately, lay on my horn since I'm in my car to get the guy's attention and get him to stop battering the woman. Yelling at him as well, but I'm going to try to avoid a physical altercation if possible mostly because I don't know if this guy is on PCP, has a deadly weapon, what. If there is anyone else around I will try to get them in on it, to call the cops as well or help me stop the guy by overpowering him with numbers.

The main point would be to get him to stop beating the woman, stall for the cops to arrive and do their job. I would get involved physically as a last resort, and would not hesitate to use a makeshift or handy weapon to bring the man to a state where I felt he was no longer a threat.

I can be very specific about what I'd do because I have had experience of something similar.
I was driving along approaching a set of traffic lights early on a Sunday Morning. I saw in front at the lights a car where this woman was being smacked about and then thrown out of the car. I drove up to her and asked her if I could help. She was crying, so i drove her to the nearest police station, and went in as a witness. The police were giving her a hard time because they knew of her (She was a local prostitute apparently). It was only when they asked me why I was with her and i told them what I'd seen that they changed their stance.
Oh and I gave a description of the car and plate number, not that they ever contacted me again over it.
I don't ever do nothing when I see someone being attacked.

Draw my pistol, tell the guy to stop or I'll shoot, and if he does basically anything other than get up and back off with his hands where I can see them in the next three seconds, he's getting shot. I'd probably let him run as long as I don't see him going for a weapon. No matter how that plays out, 911 is getting a phone call immediately after, and I know enough about trauma care to stop most types of bleeding if that's a factor.

If I don't have my pistol with me, I almost always have my pocket knife and can at least get an emergency call dialed off while closing the distance.

I'd call 911 and put the phone in my pocket with them on the line, and then rush over to put the guy in a chokehold and try to get some answers. I won't assume he's in the wrong; maybe she's a criminal or trued to rob him or something. But I'd be duty-bound to find out what's going on. I know "the smart thing" to do would be to call the police right away and then run. But I've done too many years of bouncer work and security to just run, so my instincts would kick in, and I'd rush to save her. Also, to point it out, I'd do the same thing for a male victim as well. Pretend I don't see anything. Fighting the guy is not worth it for me. I don't know both sides of the story, so I am not getting involved. Calling the police takes too long, and they would ask too many questions. Besides, he could escape before the police arrive. The guy could have mafia connections; someone else could be monitoring the alley to make sure that the "job" gets done properly. If his spotter spots me, then I will have him on my neck.
