Transference is when you try to take behaviors or traits from someone (another person besides yourself) and put them onto a different person. Such as saying my mother is a controlling b**ch, and my new female boss is a controlling b**tch as well, because she looks like my mother.

Projection is when you try to put your own negative traits you don't want to admit you're guilty of having onto your detractors and critics. Such as social justice warriors accusing everyone else but them of being bigoted, racist, and sexist, despite how bigoted they are towards white people and how sexist they are towards men.

Transference is a lot more rare.

I believe I do projection is when I tell my nephew if you keep fooling around I'm going to death tape you up and I'm going to go put you on a bus and send you all the way to the East Coast. Transference is what I do send them to the east coast that to the wrong address so they have to send them back that sucks

Just simple... There's a lot of both projection and transference on here.. People transfer their hatred of what one person did to them on to the whole gender... And people project their feelings or behavior onto others..

It gets REALLY toxic if one of the people has Borderline Personality Disorder, or even Bi-Polar. We knew a couple- he had Bi-P something horrible. They divorced years ago. One day recently, he shows up at our house (totally out of left-field) to show his new set of flashy wheels, "just call me - - - - the - - - - - (can't divulge name, but it refers to a certain product mascot), and he was obviously on a "high" Bi-P for the day. He must have crashed really hard - a week later he had hung himself. We're still good friends with the very sane ex-Mrs.
