I grew up with colorful lights, I like the different colors of the bulbs, it looks more festive,
especially when at night with all the lights off in your living room, and just the tree is lit, and you see how pretty your room looks, that holds a special place in my heart of yesteryear with your mom and dad and siblings.
Although white lights are supposed to represent the purity of Christmas, the birth of Jesus.
They just look so boring to me. However, it's a difference of opinion on how you were raised,
it doesn't really matter, just as long as you recognize the meaning of the holiday, is what's really important.
I wasn't raised celebrating Christmas
No you're fine.
Same!!
Love both but both have certain areas they shine better. Icicle lights are best with traditional white. But if you wraps trees/bushes, either could work but oftentimes color looks best on that.
Standard Christmas tree I like having lights that alternate between color and all white. You can get special bulbs for it or double wrap and alternate which light string you use each night.
If you have a lot of ornaments with fabrics/white/angelic type stuff then white lights go better. Pretty much everything else is better with color lights.
People might say I'm a little boring but I prefer the plain lights.
In recent years I've invested In the blueish white lights for a more icicle effect.
I like the multicoloured ones just in other people's home. Mostly because well I have a whole theme going on. My living room is navy white and grey.
My Christmas tree is also white!
Lol sounds great!
Thanks for mho x
White is not traditional in my opinion. Colored lights have been on trees and everything else since the beginning. White, well, they're white. Colored lights are beautiful and make you want to just keep starring at them. I can't take my eyes off the colored ones.
Well I've seen more white lights in popular settings so that's why I always think white is the traditional. But you're older so I guess you'd know what was around longer.

I love both really, but usually stick to warm white lights when dressing up the outside of the house. Modern LED Christmas lights don't have great colours compared to the old fashioned incandescent lights. I have a small collection of vintage Christmas lights that have such beautiful colours.
Awesome
White isn't traditional. Growing up, white lights weren't even a thing. For decades, especially in the 80's and 90's, colourful lights were common. White didn't become a thing till the early 2000s. I remember when they first came out. My parents got a set and we did an entire white theme.
I still prefer the colourful ones that bring back memories of childhood Christmas in the late 80's and 90's.
Yeah a few people have already said that. It looks more traditional with white.
I like traditional, white lights, but that's because most of my themes I use for my tree and house are simple. For example, this year I'm doing a pink and silver theme, so white lights would compliment it more than flashy, multicolor lights.
I only like multicolor lights on other peoples trees as weird as that sounds, lol
Your theme sounds like it's gonna turn out so cute!
I hope so! :)
I'm decorating this weekend; if anyone on here happens to ask a question about how our trees are decorated, I post pictures!
It's on my list of Christmas questions!
Coloured.
I've noticed it becoming increasingly common for people to have the white kind indoors all year round though, just as a permanent decorative light source. I think doing that with coloured lights would be a bit tacky and not easy to live with for very long.
I agree
all lights are beautiful, but i prefer the colourful lights much more. i just find them more aesthetically pleasing because there's more colours and they look beautiful together. heck, putting white lights on a bare tree with nothing else on it looks boring, but putting colourful lights on a bare tree makes it stand out.
I have the LED kinds that I use an app on my phone to change them to whatever color I am in the mood for, any color in the spectrum or various themes.
It is nice to have options. Usually I do colored though, the colors just change daily.
That's pretty dope
They call it traditional, but it's just sales spin, they were pretty much unheard of until the 90s, so to me they're the opposite of traditional. They just look cheap.
Okkk
I prefer color, my SO prefers white, so we have lights on the tree that can either be white or color. Some days they're white, other days they're color.
Good compromise
I prefer the decorations outside to be white (main squares, town's decorations included) but the tree that we have at home always needs to have colorful lights... It's kind of a tradition for us.
Nice
Traditional warm white. Brings warmth to my heart.
Couple that with a cold weather...
(Speaking of which, where the fck is the cold weather? it's late here already)
Lol that's global warming! It's set to be 65 on Monday here and I live in northeastern USA
My room has lights as well, so I prefer the white ones. Someday I would love to add more lights in my future backyard on a tree. I love lights too 💖
I have LED lights in my room. Although I never really use the white. Or red lol. Red makes it look like hell
over here... the traditional is colorful Christmas lights, not the white ones
I prefer lights off though... lmao
Of course you do
lol...
I like the white lights, but oh what the hell, the world needs some color. Lol
Lol for sure
The best are those effect ligjts that change color. From winter white to Zxmas tree green to Santa's red.
Oh yeah
Colorful ones seem more cheery to me... they remind me of being a kid (Our tree always had the colorful lights when I was growing up). They're still my favorite.
Coloured lights are the traditionals, whites only became the norm about 30 or 40 years ago.
So I've learned. A couple of other older people have said the same. I've always thought white was the traditional because I seen more of those in traditional settings.
We always used to have those larger coloured lights. Not just us but everyone. Some friends of ours even had lights that bubbled and changed colour! Then, one year in the `80's, mom decided she wanted all white lights and that's what we've used ever since. I never DID get the chance, after she died 5 years ago, to pull out the coloured lights, again!
Awww I hope you do!
Thank you but, I fear my ex-sisters had them all thrown away 2 years after they evicted me from my house! :-( Along with at least half of my belongings and all of my life-long memories!! I know I got all the ornaments, some of those are at least 100 years old but, I've never actually had a Christmas since mom died. I think, the first year, I just didn't feel like bothering. The second year, I at least got as far as pulling out the tree and started putting it together a day or so before Christmas but never got higher than the bottom level and then just figured, what's the point of going through the rest of it, Christmas is over, now. The third year I got as far as putting the whole tree up midnight Christmas Eve but never got out the ornaments and what have you and, again, just didn't bother because Christmas was already over. The 4th Christmas, I was being forced out of my house and spent it here at my aunt's house where I've been ever since. Last year's Christmas was piss-poor, too. At least we put the tree and decorations up all over the house but neither of us had money to buy presents for each other and the kitchen stove died on Thanksgiving day so, no big meal, either. Then, she died 5 days into 2021!! I ended up leaving the tree and most of the decorations up all year, kind of in her honour so, all I've got to do this year is plug the lights in, which I'll do in a week or two. (I HATE IT when people start Christmas Halloween night and stop it dead at the stroke of midnight Christmas day! I prefer the old way: the tree and decorations go up a week or two before and stay up until at least the 2nd week of Jan.!!)
As I no longer have any family, I seriously doubt my Christmas will be anything to talk about this year, either. Turn on the lights when it gets dark, turn them off when I go to bed. And, because I spend most of my time up here, I hardly ever go downstairs to "enjoy" them! No more merry Christmases for me, I guess!!
Awww. Hugs!
Thank you VERY much!! I could sure use them, right now. I was just flashing through some Christmas memories and thinking how robbed I am, now, because of those two greedy, evil bitches, that I'll never be able to have the kind of Christmas I've wanted for decades, WHERE I've wanted to have it!! It's bad enough the older of those two ruined Christmas for me when I was a kid by telling me there's no Santa and mom & dad got all the presents for us but, having me evicted from the family house the week before Christmas and costing me my life's memories and all the other stuff I've lost because of her... it's practically ruined the entire thing for me, now!! And my last close family member dying almost 2 weeks after Christmas last year certainly didn't help!! Christmas and my b-day were always the two high points in the year for me. Now, they're both just another day of the year!!
I guess I should wipe away the tears and go eat breakfast, already.
We don't celebrate Christmas here but for me it depends on what impression i do want to make. Lights of a single color—any single color, but particularly white, create a more elegant, formal look 😊
White because they are brighter. Christmas tree bubbles are colorful and shiny like reflections of white light in decorations.
I have stealth Christmas decorations they are all black lights !!
Sounds interesting
I like both but white/yellow better... there’s just something classic and magical about them
