I think at some point of life family is important. Eventually you are always part of you family but if i get married then for me my wife is more important for me after my marrige eventually she will be a part of my family. And one point of life my wife will be my only family after my dad and mom died.

Both are important in different ways and I would say you have an obligation to keep your parents alive but not to be chummy best friends if your busy with your own family and they subtract from that relationship.

A spouse should come before your children. My dad ALWAYS put my mom first and her the same. I think that really strengthened their marriage.
