Should the family have a major impact in your relationship?

Family always comes first, yes I know, but should they also come first when your happiness is at risk? When they don't agree with your choice? Not only in getting together with someone but also in letting go?
I figured a lot of people are scared to let go of their partner due to the fear of their families reaction.

I’ve been in relationships usually were my girlfriend is of a different races than myself and their families didn’t really approve so I get how complicated things can be.


The family does play a role just like friends in approval of a boyfriend/ girlfriend. I always suggest the logical yet basic question; why?
Usually it’s some sort of they see an image of the person and go like “nuh uh, I don’t like them”. How could you hate me when you don’t even know me?


If it’s given with reasons based on character, personality, political views or something related to that then I understand because at least they’re thinking and having logical thoughts. However it’s a matter of taking it into consideration and still making a choice but usually I try to personally find a way for everyone to get along.

You are absolutely right and you just read my mind, because I observe that a lot of relationships are not happy anymore, and they stick together in order to keep others happy and in order to not cause this "hurricane" in families.
According to me it's not fair, because people are sacrificing their own happiness just to keep others happy.
And judgning somebody just like that and also having the GUTS to tell them " NO HE / SHE IS NOT FOR YOU" is quiet unfair in general.
I think everyone should be free to make their own decisions and their own mistakes.

Hey natured it's been a long time.. But well in my opinion family doesn't always come first especially if they are crappy.. But no what happens between you and your partner is just that as for being afraid to let them go.. Although, my mother is usually cool, and if she doesn't like somebody I would have to look into it.. 😅..

And yes i totally agree with your answer, sadly most mother in laws especially mother in laws act upon jealousy, they can't control it, even if their daughter in law is perfect in every way, they still try to jeopardize the relationship.
It's just weird and it happens very often.

No they should support you and let you make own mistakes. They can give advice but they can't force to I to do anything. Sometimes parents overstep especially when kid is grown
It is parents job to make sure you grow into a self sufficient and effective part of society. Not to rule you with iron fist.

I totally agree here, sadly a lot of parents don't see the point. Maybe we will understand when we become parents ourselves and have adult kids i have no idea.

They give you a sincere advice. They open your eyes on things in the partner you may not see. Their opinion should be considered if they really aware of the situation. But it is still your decision to get in , out of a relationship
