I believe that the bible was written a considerable time after the death of Jesus and therefore any recollection of what he said that is documented in the bible is likely to have been greatly distorted between the time he said it and when it was written down, most likely a story passed down the generations before it was written

Simply having everything can be a curse. Having enough, and knowing what to do with it, is preferable. No lie there. Greater possession is no substitute for versitility.
