What's a safer way to dispose of trash other than a landfill?

Two come to mind, fire with a column to trap the smoke, distill it, and bury it, also there's a slower, but more complete method of using high temperature plasmas to break down trash back into simple compounds and elements that make up the products so it's no longer trash, but raw materials that can go back into processing. Problem being it takes a lot of energy to do so, and there's a size issue, as the plasma is so hot you can only contain it with magnets.

Option 3 is to just throw it in the ocean, out of sight, out of mind.

Dry it and then cremate it to reduce it to component reclaimable ash & gases chemistry and sow as fertilizer over ambient public wild lands. Nutrients are returned to the soil, this is an ecological closed system, presently constipated and backing up~ Presently not $$$ cost effective~

I prefer to buy goods with a minimum of ''wrapping'' or packaging.
Some stuff - like plastic containers - can be re-used for a range of other purposes.
And there are also many opportunities - at least here - for bio-degradable 'waste', such as take-away food wrapped in banana leaves instead of polystyrene.

Plus: get rid of such habits as to use a (plastic) straw for drinking, getting your fast-food-coffee from a ''brand''-shop, your pizza from a delivery service, and in general: fuck the take-away industry.

Our major problem with waste is our own laziness.

A few simple options:

#1 Don't create it in the first place

#2 Burn it to produce electricity, once separated

#3 compost it

#3.5 Give it to others... e. g. I give table scraps to local animals like chickens and pigs. they love fresh food and eat a lot of our unused waste food.

#3.6 stop buying so much stuff...

#4 reuse it over and over til worn out

#5 recycle it

My town closed the landfill many years ago and has a transfer station. There are separate recycling bins for plastic, paper, cardboard, glass, returnable bottles and cans, scrap metal, tires, electronics and more. The town gets some kind of a revenue stream from the scraps and there is a big dumpster where all the trash that cannot be recycled goes into. That goes to a trash to energy plant about 20 miles away.

Ideally recycling, then something like Waste to Energy but you have to watch CO2.

Also you have new tech and things like Anaerobic digestion

No trash pickup here in Rural America, legal to burn it... many have fire pits.

Otherwise, it's a long-ass two hour round-trip drive to a landfill.

Recycle what can be recycled, then burn the rest to produce steam to produce electric power and/ir steam heat.
