How much will this cost to build?

I’m not sure if gag is the best place to ask, but I thought I’d give it a try.

I’m going to be breeding my dog in 6 months and we’re looking for options to house my dog and her pups.

Does anyone have any idea how much something like this would cost to build? It would need to be insulated and liveable, because young puppies are quite fragile. Ideally with a large run off the side, filled with things to keep the puppies entertained.

It will need a bench and storage for whelping supplies, food, bedding, etc

So if anyone has any idea and can give a rough estimate, that will help heaps.

Just to add, my grandpa is a carpenter and my stepdad owns a concreting business and they build stuff too, so it would be like a diy but done by professionals (they can get their employees in)

A lot will come down to what ambient temperature you want inside the cabin

The pricey bits may be getting electricity to the cabin for lighting, cooling and ventilation.

Runs need to keep puppies inside them and safe from anything external to them (other wildlife, animals).

if they can build a double width n depth shed, then fit LED lighting (Solar is often good)

also look at safe ventilation and heating options (depends on external temperatures driving internal ambient), however insulated panels will keep cool and stop getting to warm inside.

If you have dog shows there (we have crufts etc here in UK) there are dealers at these events and often have stalls.

The other side is making sure it’s all wash downable inside, ideally with hose and kennel run detergent.

You can swap out the normal wood side of things with insulated plasterboard.

It’s just a case of building a frame to fasten the insulated plasterboard to it.

You can also double skin and cavity fill it.

Look at what use you want to put this extra room to after it’s been used for puppies, it can be a useful garden building.

That can justify spending a bit more on it.

We’re planning on breeding her regularly, it’s going to be my job and way to make money, so if it’s done, it’ll definitely get used. We also have 6 dogs so if for some reason we need to use it for one of them, it’ll get used.

The problem was that my stepdad doesn’t necessarily like having the dogs inside, even though we’ve buttered him up a little and my dogs sleep inside in crates, and my little one is allowed to roam around.

But I just talked to him and asked if his dog was inside when she accidentally got pregnant years ago, and he basically said of course, no shit, I’m not evil.

So we most likely won’t have to build it. We’ll just have to make one of the rooms up suitable for puppies.

But thank you for all this. It seems like it would be a lot of work to have to do, which I don’t think my mum and I were quite thinking of that haha.

You can get pre built ones, but you pay for it.

Personally, I would look at a floor on ground with no space between floor and ground, as prevents stuff living under the ‘shed kennel’.

Then x number of posts concreted in.

To the posts I would put insulated plasterboard external use type.

Then look at flooring etc for making it easy to wash down

Lighting, ventilation and heating as required.

You can buy a large shed and customise it with an attached run, add in lighting etc.

Puppies need your attention - not a fancy 'building'.
They feel best in your personal presence, and they'll be totally happy to sleep in a carton box - as long as you're there for them :)

Yeah I agree, I’d much rather them be inside with us. My stepdad is against dogs in the house (even though we buttered him up to letting them sleep inside and my little dog lives inside) so my mum and I were thinking he wouldn’t want the pups inside.

But I talked to him about it and asked if he had his puppies outside when his dog got accidentally pregnant, and he basically said no shit, I’m not evil.

So they’ll be inside.

My two rascals are 9 months now, and begin to be ''civilized''; as your stepdad is nice enough to make a compromise, it now could be a good idea to return a favour... and save his shoes from being destroyed :D

I know large numbers of professional breeders who have actual kennels. This looks like an art studio. Do you have a purpose for the building after the litter? Otherwise…

All that for eight weeks? How many times are you planning on breeding your dog? Why not have them in the home? Have you certified or put show/working titles on your dog to prove them before considering breeding? There are so many dogs in shelters and rescues already.

As someone who works in the dog world this just brings up red flags. lol

I’m not trying to build an art studio, this just a basic principle of an idea. It will be perfectly safe and temperature controlled, with a camera to watch them. We’re going to put it right outside my bedrooms sliding door, so I have quick access.

They will also be brought inside heaps once a bit older. The point of them being in a kennel outside is because we don’t have private, safe space for her inside and I don’t want her stressing. We have a big house, just nowhere to keep a litter.

I’m trying to do research and find the right type of building to use. Of course it won’t be an art studio, we’ll make sure it’s perfectly safe for a litter. I just meant the shell of it.

She is genetically cleared and hip/elbow scored. She will be two years and on her 3rd heat by the time she’s bred. We’re planning on breeding her every 6 months due to the research we’ve done proving that’s the healthiest option for her.

She’s a Groodle, so she can’t be shown. I’ve noticed a lot of internet people hate her breed, but they are some of the best dogs and very popular where I’m from. She’s very well behaved and has a great temperament, she’s a sweet dog. My family has only ever owned poodle crosses because of this.

I know there’s a lot of animals in shelters already. I’ve visited a lot shelters to donate supplies and hang out with the animals - I’ve never seen a poodle cross (people are quite good with animals where I’m from). It’s normally breeds like bull arabs and kelpies.

I will be matching potential owners with the right puppies to suit them, having them sign a contact that they must be returned to me if unwanted and screening owners before they get a puppy. Plus the $6,000 price tag normally scares off the people likely to surrender a puppy.

I’m definitely not doing this for the sake of it, a lot of thought and planning is going into it. I’m only 16 and I’ll be doing all the work because this is what I want to for my life.

That’s old research to skip a heat. It is now known for several reasons that a dog should be bred every heat cycle, to prevent various health issues. Mother Nature wouldn’t of given dogs the ability to breed every 6 months if they could not handle it, their bodies are designed that way.

You need to ask your grandfather. Labor would likely be the biggest input, but materials are absurdly expensive right now (thanks Brandon).

An off hand guess is you would be looking at $7k to $9k in materials (including site prep and foundation, unless you go with a raised floor).
