Have you ever roadkilled an animal?

Question

I have never hit an animal, but have had a raccoon, fox, deer, possums, cats, a dog, and birds near or in the street. The other night I saw an animal that may have been a possom, but part of me believes it was an armadillo. Really wish I had dashcam to find out.

Unfortunately a Extremely large dog. It was so quick I didn't have a chance to break. It just ran out in front of me from between other cars. I saw the dog stumble over to its owner. It was horrible. There was room for me to pull over either so I went up the road to pull over. When I got to the stop sign I noticed some ways up there was a police officer. I went straight towards him and informed him what had happened. I then turned the car around and led the cop back to the scene. The police took over but sadly there was nothing that could be done. There was no near by vets open at that time and the dog wouldn't make it to the nearest (50mins away) animal emergency hospital. It was hard standing there. Everyone was mad at me. They thought I had hit and run. No one knew I had turned around or I brought the police over who was trying to stop the bleeding. I didn't say anything as I tried to help by handing a beach towel I had in my car. When the dog took its last breath I cried. Meanwhile I knew the cop was watching me. Judging me. I wasn't sure what he was concluding but it felt awful! I backed away went to my car to get my information for the cop. As I bought my information back I overheard the cop tell the family I hadn't hit and run but turned around. He also told them I happened to find him. My heart was pounding afraid as I approach. All I could say was im so sorry. They said they were very relieved to find out I stopped. They understood it was an accident. The cop took information from everyone and informed me he had to place fault on the owners. There are leash laws and the dog was not on one. I paled. I quickly asked "they aren't going to get fined or a ticket or anything are they?" He told me it depended on me. If I claimed damaged was done to my car or I had hurt myself while braking. I was horrified. I insisted absolutely not. It was the first time I was briefly able to read the cop. He briefly seemed pleased with my answer. Papers were sign and I left. It hunts me to this day. Every time I drive by that area I slow under the seed limit.

Yeah, about a month ago.. a squirrel. Poor thing.. It literally darted in front of my car while I was driving, so I hit the brakes and swerved so that it was underneath the very center of my car. I was rolling really slowly at that point, hoping that it would not end up under my tires..

Then I FELT THE CRUNCHING UNDER MY TIRE... It was awful. It felt like crackers. I felt so bad, and I made the mistake of looking back in my mirror... the little things body.. from under its shoulders to above its knees were smashed flat with its gore everywhere..

I was purposefully going slow to avoid hitting squirrels, cats, birds, and other animals because our neighborhood it filled with them, but it still died...

Also, Fun related question for all of you to think about: Would you go to a Halloween party in a roadkill costume?

I ask not just because of the topic, but because I've seen such a costume in magazines growing up. It always perplexed me, who would want to dress up as roadkill for Halloween, but upon closer inspection, it's quite a unique costume, like nobody expects you to wear a roadkill costume, so it's perfect for being outrageous if that's your aim, and to some extent I suppose it could be stylish to some, if you don't wear the costumes that look more like actual roadkill.

Imagine coming to a Halloween Party Dressed up like this, he doesn't look half bad.

This is a cute idea for a roadkill costume, (never thought I'd be saying that about Roadkill costumes,, but there you go).

I've hit several of them. Multiple birds, at least one rabbit while I was doing 60mph, a couple squirrels, and one chipmunk when I was just barely coasting down my driveway to the street.

Close calls:
Thankfully, no deer (came real close once on the NY Thruway, just east of Buffalo).

I've had a Brama cow (fortunately) standing along side the road in AZ as I came around a blind corner once (she managed to get loose off the range).

I also came upon an elk cow in the middle of the night, grazing right on the edge of the road with her calf in Yellowstone Park. That dang zoo doesn't keep their wild animals caged at all!

I hit a deer on the highway one time while I was going full speed. It bolted out from over a guardrail in front of me and it completely smashed the front of my car in, totaled it. My car was pretty much destroyed, I had bruising on my arms from where the airbags deployed and the deer, what was left of it, was a bloody, chunky mess all over the road, the aftermath looked like something out of an 80s slasher movie and smelled God-awful.

An RCMP officer saw the whole thing because he was behind me, so he was able to respond immediately and I'm highly grateful he was back there. He told me the back end of my car came up about two feet in the air when I struck the deer.

I have hit 3 deer in my time driving... well technically one hit me (literally ran into the side of my Truck) Two died instantly and the other I put her down with the 9mm. I have a bit of a fetish for trucks so thankfully I am always in a vechical that protects me from acts of animal stupidity... and I don't break for anything smaller than tires.

I did hit and kill a Magpie once. It was very early Sunday Morning and I was driving down to the coast after I had just finished running in my new car. I wanted to see how fast it was... It;'s top speed is supposedly 202 mph

I only got as far as 159 ish before I hit it.

I used to live in area that had tons of possums. They're nocturnal, and on a rainy day, many of them bit the dust.
I was new to the area, and wasn't used to seeing tons of giant dead rats on the street.

I asked a guy what was going on. He explained it this way:

"How many possums does it take to have sex?"

I only started driving 2 months ago so thankfully I haven’t yet! I’ve come close a couple times thanks to stray dogs and cats roaming the roads at night, but I always slow down and let them cross to the best of my ability, or swerve if I have to if there’s no other cars around.

Not that I know about. I don't think we get much wildlife here in Japan. I have sometimes had to swerve or stop with stray cats here in Japan, but I've never run one over to my knowledge. If I did, I'd be broken-hearted.

I did see someone one time who ran over a cat crossing the street and I didn't know what to do. I swerved to the side of the road the cat was dead. Everything about it was crushed including its head. I didn't know who I'm supposed to kill.

I think I hit a squirrel once. And one time I was driving down th street and I hit a pigeon. I was going to the gas station and the gas station guy told me I had a pigeon in my grill. I got out and looked and he was still alive. I borrowed a broom and pried him out with it. The pigeon took two step, then flew away. I had to buy a new grill.

Unfortunately yes. I was on my bike (motorcycle... not bicycle 😅) and a kitten decided to come take a nap, right behind my rear wheel. I was trying to go back (and I was sitting astride... so I couldn't see it).

And that's how I killed a poor little kitten 🙂

I've hit deer, skunk, squirrel, turtle, dog. I carry, so in the event of deer and dog I park for 10 minutes. I'm looking to put it of it's misery. I get out the flashlight. Unfortunately, they escaped me. Could not find them. One might say you had a glancing blow. I say nope, they had a slow death.

Yeah. It was the middle of the night so I don't even know exactly what it was. It darted in front of my car at the last minute so there was no avoiding it. To this day I still don't know what it was (it happened so quickly) it could have been a small coyote. By I'm afraid it was someone's dog.😞

Not very many considering how long I've been driving. I hit a dog and a few small critters like squirrels. That's about it unless I totally forget something. I haven't hit anything at all for at least 15 years or so.

I've never killed the animal, but I have taken dead deer off the road, gutted and cleaned them and served them for dinner. They run into traffic often enough to give me plenty of supply courtesy of others.

I almost had it happen with a cat. They stay under a parked car, but only as you past by that car, it thinks it's a good time to cross the street. Animals are weird.

When I was in the military we drove a lot in convoys. A lot of wild animals did come into our path we could not slow down or pass around them. It could endanger our lives. The answer to your question is yes there has been roadkill on my pathway.

I have done that to unknown number of bugs and one bird. I almost killed a cat when it ran out into the street. I took my foot off the gas and hesitated. Hitting it with my bumper knocking it over. It then got up and ran away after I had passed over it. Had I left my foot on the gas I would have probably hit it with my passenger side tires and had I hit the brakes I would have probably hit it with my driver side tires.
