30 / 3 = 10, so cups are 10

20 - cup (10) = 10 / 2 burgers = 5

9 - burger (5) = 4 / 2, so fries = 2

5 + 2 = 7, then here is the sneaky bit, we are now multiplying not adding, so * 10 = 70.

This is the importance of showing your working, if you just said the answer was 17 you wouldn't get any marks but if you demonstrated that you had correctly deciphered the algebra but missed the sneaky multiplication switch you would still get the lions share of the marks (your name and date on the top of the paper also score you marks for whatever reason so make sure you get the low hanging fruit when being tested.)

The final answer isn't really relevant, 17 or 70 are essentially both correct and if you make a big deal about that aspect you are prick, so while you might have passed your maths exam you just failed epically at being a human.

these kind of tricks are more likely to show the level of your studies... not your gender

if you think the answer is 15, that is probably cause you just go with the familiar PEMDAS and follow it

if you think the answer could be 60 instead, that's probably cause you're more familiar with additive and multiplicative structures as well as properties, which most people only see at college age... therefore making you ask yourself in the first place, is this mathematical problem properly set up and well written, in the first place? usually they are just no, they are going to be ambiguous by default and with the intention to confuse

Oops. I only notices 2 fries in the picture, not 4. So that means the fries are worth 1 each and the final answer would be 16.

So 1x10 = 10 + 5 =15.

The problems were the second set of fries was half hidden behind the first fries, and the whole sequence was addition until it switched to multiplication at the end.

The picture was purposely flawed, not to find out who knew the correct order of operations, but who recognized small and intentionally misleading parts of the pictures.

I wasn't suggesting anything man. Just trying to help. It's REAL EASY thing to miss. It's like showing someone the word "yellow" in block letters colored green. And ask them what the word is. a lot of people will say green. Because your mind is processing two things at once and even though you clearly know it's yellow your mind processes the color first.
This "test" is designed to trip people up because you think you see the picture for what it is, not the subtle change. Because you're focusing on the problem.
I only got this one right because I got a different, but similar one wrong in the same way.
This test really doesn't really prove anything. The poster knew that. He was just having fun. It's SUPPOSED to make compitent over confident people look silly.
